Show A5 The Emery County Review, Tuesday, December 23, 2008 VOICES Celebrating the People and Lifestyle of the San Rafael Swell Area Missionary Recognition Photo by Trinidi Price The 14 year old Emery basketball tournament team strikes a pose. Tournament team shows country-girl power Sister Alexis Elaine Swasey Alexis Elaine Swasey has accepted the call to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Spain Madrid Mission. She will speak in sacrament meeting on Dec. 28, at 11 a.m. in the Castle Dale 1st Ward Stake Center. She will report to the Provo Missionary Training Center on Jan. 7. She is the daughter of Merrill and Sandra Swasey of Castle Dale and the granddaughter of Wayne and Elaine Wilberg and the late Sherman and Birdie Swasey of Boneta, Utah. Industrial Electric sponsored a 14 year old girl’s basketball team to play in a tournament in Payson on Dec. 12-13. The team members were Jeridi Price, Shandee Jewkes, Marqui Moss, Teigan Adams, Blayr Jeffs, Bryton Hess, Hailee Rogers, Haylee Cloward and Natalie Dickman. The girls were coached by Jerry Price with the help from a couple of dads. The first team they faced was from Spanish Fork. When the team walked on the court the Emery girls’ jaws dropped at the sight of how big and athletic they looked. But their pre-game jitters quickly faded as they made the first two baskets of the game. They stayed strong and in the end were victorious. The next team they faced was Springville, which Emery won in overtime. Sadly the next game against Willow Creek was lost by 3 points after an extremely physical and brutal contest. The next morning the girls faced American Fork, who proved to be a relentless opponent. The Emery girls led at the half, but lost focus in the fourth quarter, losing by 13. The last game was against Diamond Fork. This team was persistent as they ran a full court press the entire game. The Emery team was successful in breaking the press and drawing the fouls. This, along with a tough defense, gave the girls another victory. “We are very proud of how hard the girls fought. They were up against schools that have enrollments of 1,200 to 1,500 students. We were made fun of by some for being country girls, but in the end we offered up a good ol’ country butt whoopin’!” said Coach Jerry Price. The team wanted to thank the parents and Industrial Electric for the opportunity to play. This year the bazaar was held at the new Green River Seniors Center. After the collapse of the ceiling at the community center on 155 South Broadway, the center moved to the “old” seniors center 125 South, Long Street, with the generosity and help of the city of Green River and the Emery County Commissioners, who made it possible and affordable for the center to acquire ownership and get moved in and back to providing the valuable and needed prevention and after school programs offered. The staff of the new seniors center and the Emery County Commissioners made it possible for the community center to hold their bazaar at the new seniors center this year and it was a huge success. AmeriCorps VISTA Jean Tidwell, who works with nutrition programs at the center, supervised volunteers and staff in preparing and serving a turkey dinner and a bevy of delectable desserts. AmeriCorps VISTA Sarena Shorts supervised volunteers and VISTAS in decorating and organizing the senior center for this fun-filled event.
