several of the apostles addressed the baines confining their remarks mostly to doc trinal topics president joseph F smith presided over the conference though president snow was in attendance throughout the day the other prominent officials present were brigham young arancis M lyman john henry heber J grant john W taylor barnner W merall anthon 11 lund matthaes Matt hals F cowley abraham 0 woodruff kudow clawson and aeed smoot members of the quorum 0 apostles patriarch john smith isey moul young george reynolds baugham U roberts J gol den kimball pulon S wells and jos eph W mcmurrin of the first seven presidents 0 seventies wm preston robert burton and john R winder of the presiding bishopric after the opening exercises the prayer being offered by lider jon nicholson 1 resident banow addressed the congregation lie reminded them that the work in wh ch they were en could prosper only through the bleb aings of arod upon their honest ex and sa d they must labor with all zeal tor the interests of the people many addresses would be made from the stand during conference and he felt assured that the people would re ceide that for which they would feel well repaid in coming long distances then the president dwelt upon the im mortality of the soul and sacrifices with the promises made unto the saints president Pies ident banow said they to be the best tl e most virtuous and the mast belt sacrificing people on the face of the globe and added we are referring to the work of the mis sio sent into the world president snow said it is now as it was in U e days of iloah as in the da s of jesus christ very few are will ng to accept the truth in closing president snow said if the baines would exercise the proper spirit in their faith and prayers the present would be the most success fal conference yet held the speakers at the afternoon ses sion were apostles woodruff cowley and lund lider roberts offering prayer at the opening of the ses sion both of the sessions saturday batur day were largely attended apostles barnner W john W laylor and bieber J grant were the speakers at the morning session and apostles george teasdale and john henry smith and elder W penrose occupied the at hernoon the large attendance in the body of the tabernacle and also in the choir was commented upon by several of the speakers ahe prepress of the church the duties of the members and the necessity of a pro apt payment ot thi thing were the themes touched upon in the opening prayer in the afternoon elder angus M cannon asked that the healing influences of bcd rest down upon president george Q cannon who is ill at monterey that he might round out his full measures of days upon the earth and there was an intimation in the invocation that more apostles were to be sent on mis s when be asked that the blessings of god attend the twelve As postles as they went foith to open the doors of the gospel to every kindred tongue and people apostle smith s main theme was the duty of the saints to pay promptly their tithes and other obligations and he referred to the tithing books as being the records of the budges of israel at the closing sessions of conference the remarks of the speakers were most ly of a doctrinal nature apostle young at the afternoon session taking occa sion to call the gentiles of the state to basl basing his remarks upon the allegation that they were mal amog and bearing false witness against the saints looked upon the alleged efforts to destroy the work of the saints as efforts to destroy the perpetuity of the nation but said this would never be permitted by the elders of israel that they would maintain the ration and not permit its banner to be trailed in the dust several others addressed the saints dur ng the day several of whom dwelt upon the doctrines of the balth and chiefly upon the law of tithing an overflow meeting was held at the As hall and at the close of the general conference the scandinavians met in the building the names of the general authorities of the church were presented and sus tamed at tl e morning session the sem annual conference of the deseret broday school un on was held in the tabernacle sunday evening secretary horace ens agn read his statistical report which showed that the union was composed of a schools with 12 teachers and lucers 48 male and 51 fe nale pupils total pupils 1048 and in addition the church had 31 cottage and m ss conary sunday schools with 1583 teachers and officers and pupils making a toddi of 14 teachers and officers and pup Is making persons en gadea in the work the
