However, the Utah Department of Commerce, Division of Consumer Protection reminds Utahns that not all charitable need- - even a scrooge organizations are legitimate and cautions them to give wisely when making a contri- bution. Fraudulent charities use a variety of methods to take advantage of Utahns generosity during the holiday season, said Francine Giani, director of the Division of Consumer Protection. Were not saying ' Forum 1 check out to the charity- - not to the person seeking the contribution. Be cautious or organizations that pressure you for money immediately. A legitimate organization will welcome your contribution at any time. Dont be swayed by a sad story until you have all the facts. Let the facts determine your decision, not an appeal to your emotions or beliefs. Remain in control of the situation. You decide to whom, when and how much you will contribute. Giani also noted that a new twist to charitable solicitations is becoming more and more evident. Several organizations are asking consumers to donate from beyond the grave by willing a contribution to the charity. Were not suggesting this type of solicitation is fraudulent, but it could be and we want Utahns to be cautious. When considering this type of contribution, Giani makes to avoid giving, but just to use caution and common sense when contributing. When making any type of charitable contribution, Giani encourages consumers to keep in mind the following: Is the charity registered with the state, what is their permit number, and what percentage of the contribution will be used for the program or research as compared to the the following additional sugamount used for additional gestions: fund raising or administrative Thoroughly investigate the costs? It seems that the cut off line the editor: To This letter is just for fun, so I hope no one takes me to seriously. I am a tax payer here in Emery County that has observed some things that Id like to comment on and hopefully have someone give me the answers to a question or two. Back in the century there was a move on for the Southern states to secede from the Union. Now I know someone reading this is not going to know what the word secede means, and they probably will not look it up mid-nineteen- th either, so I will define it. Webster defines secede as: to withdraw from an organization or communion (as church of political party). Now someone else reading this is going to ask. Secede, from what? Please bear with me for a moment. There has been talk around, mostly in fun I am sure, about the state of Utah being involved with secession. The inquisitive mind the most important are infrastructure (roads, water sys- Planning meeting the editor: To Several people have inquired about our next Master Planning meeting time. It will be held 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the court house is the Wasatch Front. Everything east of that line seems to be second rate in everything from sports to weather. Im not writing to discuss that point, at this time. My focus is a little closer to home, yes right here in good old Emery County, A Great Place to Live, Work, and Play. Hold that thought, A Great Place to Live, Work, and Play. Ive heard people comment that parts of this county are not as good or as important as other parts, that is until tax time or election time, and that maybe we should secede. Let me make a point. To the traveler coming into Emery County along SR10, to that inquisitive reader SR10 means State Road 1 0, from the north there is a nice looking, full color, lighted bill board, both sides, located eight miles, count them (eight), south of the EmeryCarbon County line, and 44 miles north of the Em- - tems, schools, services, etc.) and the second factor is a young well trained, committed work force. We have more of both of these two factors than virtually any other rural area in the state. com- mission chambers. The topic is directly related to planning and zoning ordinances and policies. I have enclosed notes from a keynote address by Gov. Leavitt. His predictions and plans are very interesting and have direct reference and bearing on both our planning process and some insights on what our state will probably look like in the future. The Wasatch Front is growing at an alarming rate. If some of that growth is pushed toward rural areas as he suggests, we may well be a major recipient of that growth. There are two reasons for saying this. Companies looking for a place to start or enlarge a business want manv things, but two of Our infrastructure is directly related to our energy tax base. Because of our tax base, we have better roads, sidewalks, curb and gutter, drinking water, secondary water, schools, police, ambulance, etc. , etc. than virtually any rural county in the state. If you were looking for a place to put a business wouldnt you want these things in place. The second factor that of a young, committed work force is also directly related to UP&L plants and our mining jobs. We have one of the youngest populations, not just in Utah, but in the nation. Our high school has the distinction of being named one of very few erySevier County line to the traveler from the south. There are other main roads that the traveler can enter Emery County on namely SR61 9 1,31, 24 and Just for your information I have traveled all of these roads start to finish within the last year, with the exception of and do not remember seeing any new signs advertising Emery County, but the one located between milepost 50-5- 1 on SR10. If all this talk about miles, directions, SR and milepost has you having an anxiety attack then maybe you need some time out and go for a drive along some of these roads to see for yourself and not take my word for it. To the reader who will not go see for themselves the north side of this bill board reads Emery County A Great Place to Live, Work, and Play. The south side reads LEAVING? Bulletin board Bulletin board policy question of secession from the county. If it sounds like Im unhappy and want to secede, nothing could be further from the truth. I like it here in Emery County. I was however wondering, as a tax payer if we are using tax dollars to advertise Emery County, when if ever will we see signs located on these other roads? And a little closer to their starting points? I know that the sign located between milepost 50-- 5 1 is close to power lines and property that was probably bought easily although not cheap. But within a mile of the Emery Carbon County line and a mile to the east of SR10 there is power that could be run to a point a little closer to the county line than eight miles. Next time one of these signs goes up, and I hope one does soon, lets hope the people responsible for the placement will be a little more thoughtful about its location so as to not exclude a good portion of the residents of the beautiful county.
