Inexplicably we get just as tongue tied when talking about money as we do when talking about sex. Parents are often afraid to talk about money because they are embarrassed. They may feel that they arent great money managers themselves, so they shouldnt give advice. They may also fear that their children will broadcast their salaries to everyone at school. This is just an example about the prevalence of this taboo. Knowing salaries really isnt as important as learning proper attitudes about money. You dont want your children to end up as spendthrifts or penny pinchers. Money is only a tool a tool you want your children to use properly. Similar to sex education, parents may not know how much to tell their children or at what ages to approach the subject. Money skills should be taught gradually and with an understanding of how much the individual child can comprehend. These are some general age related guidelines: Children ages 3 to 5. This is a good age to start with a piggy bank. Children this age can learn to sort the coins by size and eventually learn to count. You can also take them to the store and let them pay for an item. For instance, give them a dollar to spend and help them identify items they can afford. Ages 6 to 7. Start an allowance. Your child can also learn about budgeting basics by sorting money into different jars one for fun day to day spending, one for "places and things and another for future spending (savings). At this age, the future may be only three or four days ahead. Ages 8 to 10. At this age, can help your child learn you about and develop a spending plan. Introduce the concept of savings and help them open a savings account. Children this age are often eager to earn money, but are too young for most jobs. Try to develop jobs around the house or neighborhood where they can work for small amounts of money to avoid stifling their interest and enthusiasm. You can also give them money to purchase household items for you. You can also introduce the concept of loans and credit by allowing children to set up (and making sure they stick to) an IOU account within the household. 12,850 acres of that total not be included in wilderness designation. The area is 18 miles west of Green River in Emery County. Desolation Canyon: With 290,845 acres covering Emery, Carbon and Grand counties, this is the states largest WSA The BLM is recommending that 224,850 acres be designated wilderness. The area lies along the Green River about eight miles east of Sunnyside and six miles north of Green River. Turtle Canyon: This WSA includes 35,619 acres in an area in Emery County about eight miles southeast of Sunnyside. The BLM recommends that none of this WSA be designated as wilderness. Although the President has endorsed the BLM recommendations, there are several Elections (Continued from Page 1A) ary elections may do so at the clerks office up to 20 days prior to the election. Also, vot- ers may register with registration agents on Sept. 1, 2 and 3. Mr. Funk also said that those who need absentee ballots should make application now. summer. Also, Rep. Wayne Owens has a wilderness proposal for Utah which includes 5.4 million acres. In a recent press release, Rep. Owens said of this proposal, My wilderness proposal would preserve unique, 300 sandstone million-year-ol- d formations. It would also, however, weigh the wilderness value of each one of the 126 constituent pieces of land in that proposal against the mineral or other economic opportunities. It is not intended to be enacted in its current form and only compromise decisions will yield a wilderness bill. and John Stockton.
