Add to that the 3,88 inert matter and the buyer was paying for grain that has only 90 lbs. of food value for each 100 lbs. of "grain". This sample contained 550 seeds of wild oats and 60 poverty weed seeds per 100 lbs. along with the 15 other species of weed seeds. Many of these seeds will pass through the animal to which it is fed and when the manure is spread on the fields add to an already great weed prob- - by BdH year old daughter of Ellis and Carolyn Allred of Pleasant GroVe, Utah, has recently been informed that she has been made a member of the National Honor Society. j She was accepted along with other people throughout the U. The club represents the fundamental objective for which schools are instituted and give recognition to those who have attained the desired goals. JoLyn is the granddaughter of Mr and Mrs. Homer Duncan, Ferron, and Mr. and Mrs. R, M. Allred of Emery, Emery County Jaycettes (agricultural With the chill of winter in the air and an occasional snow flury, it is a little difficult to think of and remember problems caused by wends. Sure there are still many areas in the county where weed growth of the past season causes an otherwise beautiful ladnscape to take on a depressing, rundown quality. We should be thinking of ways in which to control weeds in the coming season now and not wait until midsummer to grow concerned about this menace. Plans for weed control next summer should begin when arrangements for seed buying are being made. In a survey conducted a few years ago, samples of grain seed were collected from farmers drill boxes and analyzed. One of these samples contained five different kinds of noxious seeds. By actual count, the seed was found to contain 149,000 seeds of wild oats, 8, 200 seeds of held bindweed (morning glory), 8, 800 poverty weed seeds, 800 quackgrass seeds and 400 seeds of nightshade per 100 pounds of seed. That makes a total of 167,000 noxious weed seeds in 100 pounds of grain seed. If 125 lbs. of this seed were planted per acre (the amount the farmer said he was planting), it would be an average of five noxious weed seeds per square foot of the field. The damage done to the land by planting seed of this type would take years to overcome by cultural means or it would require some rather expensive chemical treatments and die' fallowing of the land for one year. At any rate the "savings" on the farmers seed bill would be more than used up in crop losses and subsequent weed control costs. Another major source of weeds in some instances is the feed grain fed to animals. Recently a sample of weed grain Mr. and Mrs. Louis B.
