Too often, in the past, our county has been hurt and growth that we could have had has been stifled, due to the attitude that if that town gets it, we wont supThe same thing could rob the port a hospital, unless through coof county operation, every single resident of the county is in favor of, and pushing the project in any way possible. As an outgrowth of the public meetheld ing Wednesday evening of last week, architects were authorized to submit preliminary drawings to the state medical association, who will in turn make application to the government for approval of the project. If approved, with government funds made available, it will then become necessary for a county bond election to be held to produce sufficient funds for the countys share of the struclufc. This point is the basis for our plea to unity. You can readily see that if the old attitude of either we get it or no one does, is to prevail, it will be rather hard for a bond election to carry, with only the people in the town to get the hospital voting in favor of the bond. If a bond issuance is refused, the w hole project is lost, and we will continue to be one of the few counties in dire need of hospital facilities, according to surveys. To those of you who feel that a county' hospital is economically unsound, we would like to refer you to a survey completed by four county residents appointed by the county commission, the results of which were presented at a public meeting held Wednesday evening of last week. The complete results of this survey are included elsewhere in this paper, but the jist of its message was the fact that most of the hospitals surveyed, which were comparable in size and economic conditions as would be this county hospital, were economically sound, and were in most cases operating with only token help from county sources. On the average, each county had levied of a mill towards support of the hospital, and they were operating within this amount. Emery county at the it. live-tent- hs Huntington, 4221 Clawson, 5533 Elmo, 6637 Green River, J04-343- 5 present time has a levy of four tenths of a mill for hospital and indigent funds, which should support the hospital w ithout any raise in taxes. This money is being spent at the Price hospital at the present time. The only cost then to the taxpayer would be the repayment of the bonds. This would amount to about three or four dollars per year over a period. It is our opinion that the importance of a county hospital is far too great for us to let our personal prejudices endanger this project. When we consider that this function alone will retain some 80 to 100 thousand dollars in the county per year, which otherwise would be exported. Can we honestly say that there is not om person in the county who will not feel the impact of this stimulated economy? As we have said, however, the whole project hings on our support. The commissioners have acted in good faith, and should, and can we are sure, expect the same action on our part. The Mathis attended a Hunting-to- n class reunion in Price that While turning over in bed Allen -- The greater part of American farm production takes place far from the oceans. Rut those oceans which are the highways on which foreign commerce moves are mighty important to our farmers. Heres why. During the last fiscal year, $1 billion 700 million worth of US. farm commodities went into export markets. The significance of this has been summed up by the American Farm Bureau Federation in these words: if U.S. export markets are lost, it would be necessary to take out of production the 50 million acres of cropland now devoted to the production of commodities for export. . The fact that the great oceans lap our shores doesnt mean that foreign trade moves automalieally, as a matter of course. There must be ships to handle the cargoes. More than 20 years ago the government recognized that we could not strengthen and develop our foreign trade without at the same time strengthening and developing our own Merchant Marine. The result of that thinking was the Merchant Marine Act of 193G, which firmly established a general policy that has been followed ever since. Under the terms of that Act, we have a U.S. flag Merchant Marine, built and maintained in American yards and manned with high-pai- d American which crews, regularly plies the essential trade routes ot the world. The importance of this foreign trade is rivaled only by its importance to national defense. Agriculture, like industry, needs the oceans and the ships that sail them. Monday evening.
