Although a primary site east of plant Emery town has been identified by Energy Synfuels Associates, other sites are also being looked at. Alternative sites shouldnt be release until after the primary site proves to be a bad choice, he said. Bomb Property tax up scare 100 percent closes mine The Emery County Board of Commissioners approved a move to raise the property taxes throughout the county 100 percent during a rescheduled commission meeting April 15. According to County Assessor Gerald Stanton, he was directed by the commissioners to raise the property taxes 100 percent and follow the the State Legislatures order to roll back 20 percent. He said that this was one of four options that his office had considered and presented to the board. Other options that he listed were to factor 200 percent that the Utah State Tax Commission had ordered or do nothing at all. Representatives from each town were in attendance. Stanton said that the cities will have to roll back their assessed mill levy. The law says that cities can only collect six percent more revenue following in a property taxes assessment or re-- factoring of property, he said. Stanton said this was a temporary move made to get the UTC off our backs. If we can get away without doing something next year, then we will have to do it again the third year, he said. Besides the cities, the Castle Valley Special Service District said it could cut back one mill and the school district earlier volunteered to reduce its mill levy by one mill. With the mills being cut in the school and service district, as well A bomb threat closed the Trail Mountain Mine Wednesday, April 8. Chairman In what was called a very patriotic speech, County Commissioner D. Roger Curtis addressed the Emery County Republican convention Thursday April 16. Curtis stated that the local party needed to find qualified candidates to run on the Republican ticket during the 1982 general election. He also said that people in the county need to support President Ronald Reagans proposed budget cuts. It is disappointing when I see Republican school teachers complaining that their programs are being cut or eliminated. They have the attitude of do what you want to the other guy, but dont cut my budget, he said. Curtis said that the county tried to be very tight with its budget so as not to increase the mill levy this past ,year. He brought applause from the convention members when he said that the state needed a Republican governor. Commissioner John Parker also addressed the convention listing some of the accomplishments that the commission has done during the past several years. He will be facing re - election in 1982. The central committee passed a resolution stating that any person wishing to run on the Emery County Republican party ticket is under obligation to gain approval from the County Central Committee in order to receive recognition and for Financial support from the party organization. The resolution is intended to help the party support candidates who support their platform. Representatives from the offices of Senators Jake Gam and Orrin Hatch addressed the convention. They were seeking support from the county for the upcoming re -election bid by Sen. Hatch. Congressman Jim Hansen was also represented. Allan Thorpe was elected party chairman for the next two years, Virginia Snow was named the vice chairman, Dan Wells, secretary, and Steve Barton was named treasurer. . |
