The election has been set for July 2. Although the project has been in the planning for several years, we find that little is known by the citizenry of the county as to the various aspects of the undertaking. Size of the building, costs, location and facilities offered are relatively unknown figures to many. These facts should he forthcoming in the near future, however, through the foundation with which the county is cooperating in the proposed project. As is the case whenever a bond election occurs, factions are being gathered and battle lines are appearing. There are, however, undertones that are now developing that tend to discolor rather than clear the issue. It is concerning these that we would like to comment. In speaking with people from various areas of the county, we hear, all too often, two opposing ideas being expressed. One is to the effect that, I am in favor of a rest home, but I certainly wont vote for it in Perron, because the people there were the ones who were instrumental in stopping us from getting our hospital, or what ever their pet project might have been. This attitude is prevalent in many communities, and is not particularly directed towards Ferron, but rather toward every other community than their own. We do feel, however, that this feeling is softening as people realize that in order to progress, we must enjoy full cooperation. The second altitude that we hear from many people is opposite in scope, but equally dangerous to the growth of our county. A sample statement might be paraphrased as follows: Weve helped you build a new high school in Castle Dale, a new grade school in Orangeville and a new' grade school in Huntington, and were helping to build the Emery County Project, which will only benefit the Cottonwood and Huntington creeks. Now its about time the rest of the county supports us and helps us get a rest home in Ferron. On the surface, this statement doesnt seem too alarming. However, if we were to use as a basis for determining a location for any county improvement only the fact that it is now this towns TURN, or that towns TURN, as is suggested by the foregoing statement, our county would continue to deteriorate as it has during the past decade. To assume that every community must share equally in the pie, dividing the economic strength of the county, and preventing any concentrated growth, is stone-ag- e thinking. Metropolitan areas are competing for every dollar that is spent, and the only way rural communities can survive is through economic strength, which in turn can only be obtained by banding together in concentrated grow th. A project, such as the rest home, must stand on its own merits which we feel this particular project does. Since Emery county has such a high percentage of elderly people it seems only right that some efforts be made to care for them. The site was chosen in Ferron because of its serene beauty, location and other assets, not because of the fact that it is mnv Perrons turn, nor was it because Castle Dale, Huntington and Orangeville have already had their share. On July 2, we will notin' voting whether or not Ferron will get a rest home as some would have us believe. We will be voting to determine whether or not the older people of the county will have adequate, peaceful, comfortable surroundings in which to spend their declining years.
