Nadauld ing in interesting times! A top ten list of things to think about would include, among others: the subprime mortgage mess, the Wall Street bailout, oil and gasoline prices, renewable energy sources, Iranian nuclear ambitions, the Large Hadron Collider, Chinese astronauts, the . Yankees missing the playoffs, and Brett Favre playing for the Jets. Who would-a- thunk it?! If one wants to make sense of these things (and as I write this, a small part of me wonders why anyone_ would), a lot of reading, thinking and analyzing needs to be done. Reading, thinking, analyzing: these are some of the skills that Interim | president, Dixie State College are gained by pursuing a college education. Brigham Young, who sent the first settlers to Dixie, suggested that everyone — regardless of what they did for a living — ought to have some skill they could do with their hands. I believe the converse is true, as well. Everyone also ought to have a skill they can do with their head. Hyrum Smith of Franklin Planner and Tuacahn renown is speaking about using your head when he says that you can only think as clearly as your vocabulary will allow you to. Education is about the meaning of words. It’s about the ability to organize and employ words to communicate clearly both in speaking and writing. It's about using your head to analyze data, to draw conclusions and implement strategies. These are the skills that are needed for present and future jobs. These skills can be applied to problem solving in any industry that currently exists or will emerge from the constant change that characterizes our 21st century society. When skilled labor jobs are plentiful and well paid, it is tempting to believe that it’s not necessary to Pet Or THE WEEK learn to do things with your head when you can make a comfortable living with your hands. But the recent downturn in the local economy and the turmoil in the national economy should send us all a message. We all better learn to use both our heads and our hands. So if you haven't taken a college class lately, we invite you to give us a try at Dixie State College. We have a variety of four-year degrees, stellar instructors, small class sizes, and a student services staff eager to help you plan out a path to a college degree. Learning is challenging.
