But the workers are not the proverbial brownies only firemen who are cheerful and happy In fixing up dolls and other toys in their spare moments for poor little kiddles to enjoy at Chrlstmastide. Lieutenant O. H. Smith has been dubbed the "Doll Mechanic" because of his ability In patching up broken bits of "dollanity Into specimens that might delight the heart of any little girl. His private room has been converted into a veritable work shop and the trimnese of his bed marred by the sprawling bodies of numerous headless, limbless or otherwise afflicted dolls. A gruesome sight to the uninitiated would be a box of eyes that will later furnish orbs or wondrous lustre Fifteen to twenty dolls each day are brought into the station and given to the firemen for repairing. The repaired dollars are then given to the Elks ladles, cooperating with the firemen's wives and other benefactresses who volunteer to dress them. The repairing of toys has been well under way for two months, and by Christmas eve about 750 dolls will be given away. Last year It was estimated that 2800 children were gladdened with dolls that had been repaired by the combined efforts of all the city firemen. The other men of the Sugar House station have spent their spare time fixing various other broken toys. "It is a pleasure for us to do this We are work. said one of the men.
