Show EAST SALT LAKE SUGAR HOUSE settlement of these valleys will long Lattere be remembered by the -day Saints and others passing through Vtah to the Golden West and north to Oregon. My father, C. A. Smoot, was for many years bishop or Sugar House during the migration of the saints to the valley by ox team, and I remember very vividly of hearing him give out in our Sunday meetings a notice like this: "Brothers and sisters, a train of immigrant saints are due to arrive in Sugar House on such a day and hour, all you brothers who have peaches, plums, apricots, apples or other kinds of fresh fruit, kindly bring them to the Sugar House corner and pass them out to the saints, who are weary and hungry from their long journey over seas and plains. They will be thankful for what you can do for them. Any little gift in the way of food, molasses, cakes, pumpkin pies, doughnuts, and so on, will be appreciated by them." The response would be wagons loaded with fruit and vegetables of all kinds, banked on the comer at the foot of the hill, now known as Eleventh East and Twenty-firs- t South, and the sisters of the ward all out In their calico dresses and sunbonnets, out fruit and food to the saints.passing The men folks were on the farm at work, the sisters were doing the honors. The Immigrant season into the valley was always later summer and early fall, when fruit was ripe and plentiful. Sugar House is on the map with a history in the settlement of Utah and the weBt. She was large and populous, covering an area of 814 by 18 miles, keeping in line and step with her sister wards In the old-tim- INDUSTRIALLY Sugar House was as wldelyVnown and as often spoken of in the early history of Utah as Salt Lake City. Sugar House was the home of all early industrial plants. People from all parts of the new country tame to raw Sugar House to exchange their materials for our manufactured products. Canyon Creek, or what later became known as Parleys Creek (named after Parley P. Pratt) was ideal for furnishing the necessary water power for In I860, manufacturing purposes. thirteen years after the entrance of the no pioneers into the valley, there was fewer than 20 mills and manufacturing plants in full operation on Canyon Creek. In Lambs Canyon (12 miles up Parleys) a man by the name of James Lamb (after whom the canyon received its name) built a sawmill which later was taken over by Jos. A. Young. Ferric Little and Cltas. Decker, turning out lumber, shingles and lath. A little further down the canyon Wm. Taylor and Dines Dixon both built saw mills and operated them to full capacity, finding a ready market with the people in the valley below. Peter Olsen and Jas. Laird (father of our fellow townsman and home builder, Edward Laird) also early settlers in Canyon Creek done a thriving business by cutting and shaping house logs which they sold to the people, as many of our early homes were built of hewn logs. Later a Government mail station was established at the forks or Junction of Parleys Creek road leading to Lambs Canyon and Parleys Park, and the old immigrant road leading over the Little Mountain into Emigration inCanyon and over the Big Mountain to East Canyon. Bishop J. Y. Hardy had charge or this mail station and presidedover the new ward (which lormerl was a part of Sugar House) and was known as Mountain Dell Ward. Emerging from the mouth of Parleys Into the open valley of the Great Salt Lake a tannery, a wool canting and cotton gin were built by Pres. Brigham Young. A short distance below another woolen mill was built by A. O. Smoot, Robert T. Burton and John Sharp, and known as the 8moot, Burton and Sharp Woolen Mills, and managed by James McGhie. Next in line was the State Penitentiary, a mail factory, a barrel, tub, churn and bucket factory, a sugar mill (from which Sugar House derives its name), a foundry, a log school uouse, chemical works, a match factory, a cotton and wool carding mill in the Sugar works, by E. R. Young A Sons, a button factory, and a paper mill. The latter manufactured the paper upon which the Deseret News, the Daily Telegraph, Juvenile Instructor, and many other small papers and magazines were published, also wrapping paper. Three flour mills were built and operated on Canyon creek. A cocoonery and mulberry farm, and many other community enterprises found suitable locations for the manufacture of articles so much needed in the development of new homes. The products found a ready market for our people in all parts of the intermountain west. All travel from north to south, from past to west, passed through Sugar House. What is now Eleventh East street and Highland Drive was in Lhose days "The Old Cdhntry Road. ind was used as a public highwav from Cache Valley in the north to St. George in the south, and was used many years before State street was laid out. Long before the pioneers came to I'tah, Eleventh East, from the Cottonwoods lo South Temple, or Brigham street, aras a deer trail, used by wild animals in reaching the salt licks on the scores of the Great Salt Lake. All if the valley lying west or this trail ras covered with willow patches, luagmlres, bullnish and boggy land, as vldence of the existence of this trail. One distinct feature still remains. You who have frequently traveled Eleventh East street will have noticed at Thirteenth South a crook In the street, and in early times waif called the "Dog's Hind Leg," because it resembled the crook in a dog's leg. Sugar House was also a point of r travgreat interest to the eling from east tu I lie west, and northwest. It was the first settlement, the first evidence or civilization, reached Dn the long journey west from the great Missouri river in the east, to Ihe Pacific on the west, thrilling many a human heart with joy unspeakable as they gazed upon the broad valley and the sun glistening lake before them. What a relief to the eye. What , s (hanged condition. Many a surefooted, weary and hungry with his long anil dangerous journey iver the sterile plains nl Wyoming and Nebraska, seeking gold and a home In the Tar west, stopped and offered a Mlent prayer to God for his sale Jour- - city. In recent years Sugar House has suffered many palnrul r amputations, the directing hand of our church authorities, until she now rovers but a small area of her former self, and now, arter the long years of honored membership in the sisterhood of ward there comes lo the front, a new importation or modernists who would take away from her the long-tim- e honored name of Sugar House, and us with some morern name that ran be set to jazz music and high sounding euphemism. new fad,8,, win t,!?1 soul, yet a little longer in patience before changing the reasons so numerous and so name, for sacred to the memory of the old members of the ward. Of course, each hour of sunlight brings mors heat to the equator, but the hours of sunlight each day Increase in number the farther one goes north. Therefore, while the sun Is shining the arctic receives more hours of sunlight a day than does the equator and altogether It gets mors heat, says the DArolt News, As one goes north the length of day Increases more rapidly than the amount of heat per hour decreases Consequently, although the heat per hour received at Winnipeg, Canada, is less than at New Orleans the amount of heat received per day Is greater. That is one reason why In July Winnipeg Is frequently hotter titan New Orleans For about five weeka every summer more iieat per day Is received from the sun on a square mile In the arctic than at the equator.
