Barker of the modern language department of the Pniversity. who returned recently from the annual convention of the Modern Language Association of America at Ann Arbor, Michigan. An exhibit of phonetical apparatus demonstrated the Universitys superiority in that department, Professor Barker said. Professor Barker gave a report on The Application of Present Day Phonetics to Historical Phonetcs," at the convention and was again appointed head of the department of phonetical research. He also made a report on various examples of speech for the present day English section and was appointed on that committee for 1924. The principal theory that Professor Barker has based all his research work on is that the breadth and the control that is made of it are the important factors, and that the position of the organs is riot one of the rest but one of the movement It practcally revolutionizes the previous ideas held in phonetics and greatly simplifies the correction of faulty pronuciaiton in persons seeking to master a foreign language. Professor Barker has published sev eral articles explaining his theory and the experiments he has made to prove it, and these have been accepted by some of the most eminent men of the country. Many unusual opportunitise were offered for education in scout lore, according to scout master Simmons, and detailed study was made of animal habits during the winter months. The haunts, habits, and movements of birds and animals during cold weather were exceedingly interesting to the boys, who ordinarily have the opportunity of observing nature during the sumer months.
