C Ferron was wa asked to accompany them he being familiar with that section of the country Mr Ferron Ferrou says says- their Investigation tion brings out the following facts Probably more snow has fallen and still lies on the Indian can canyon on etc divide than in many years We covered a great portion of or orthis this divide on snow shoes We found that nothing to six feet of snow is ison ison ison on the old road from the Cottonwood Cottonwood Cotton- Cotton w wood od fork of to Whiteriver White river This is a d distance stance of six miles and is on a ridge or benches for that distance Within a distance of from one- one quarter quarter miles south of this road we picked nicked out a location running running running run run- ning up the west fork of approximately on onan an old trail on which we did not encounter an any snow until we got within one- one quarter of a mile from the top This snow was about three and a half haIr feet deep and would proD ably not lie He with a road graded up four feet I realize that with the development we would necessarily have to have at this point we would have a longer distance In snow but on the quin side this would not be much I longer than the distance given On the White river sid side we did not go through more than one eighth of a mile mUe of snow until we came on to the wind swept slopes of the Trail Hollow fork of White canyon canyon can can- yon This distance would be greater taking in the development necessary for grade as in the preceding case Down White river the snow conditions conditions conditions condi condi- are not bad enough toto toto to toto to seriously interfere with traffic We Ve took in other routes but none compared with the above The great advantage of this route is that it lies on the south slopes slapes which are practically always bare and wind swept This road will run easterly and westerly through the settled portion of Duchesne county for a distance of about 32 miles and about 17 miles In the southern part of Wasatch Its western terminus would be at Soldier Summit in the latter county While a more complete survey will be necessary to give the maximum maximum maximum maxi maxi- mum grade on the proposed road the general situation of the tho road seems to give plenty of chance for development for suitable ite Ie grades The elevation of oC Soldier Summit is feet That of the divide seven seven or eight miles away is feet the elevation of oC the forks of at about eight miles from the divide is about feet the elevation of the tho mouth of the Avin Avin- its confluence with the Str Strawberry river is about feet the distance between the latter points is about 13 miles The elevation elevation elevation ele ele- ele- ele of Duchesne is approximately approximate approximate- ly feet and the distance between between between be be- tween the last two points is about 20 miles It Is evident that some advantage would be gained by the construction of this road among which are the following Between Soldier Summit Summit Summit Sum Sum- mit and Duchesne an adverse grade of but 1200 feet is encountered while on federal aid project No 1 I over feet of adverse grade Is encountered encountered encountered en en- countered between Helper and Du Du- Du- Du chesne Another advantage Is that tha when I Soldier Summit Is used as a railroad site an advantage of a lower rate is gotten on goods shipp shipped d from Salt Lake or Provo and points west est Still another advantage would be that the traveling public when reaching Soldier Summit In the winter time could go right on to tor r Salt Lake in their own machines I If they so BO desired All towns and settlements would be tributary to this road it passing through all the principal points Probably the main advantage would be the lack of snow snow on the majority of the route The Tho following table of distances Is interesting Miles l Duchesne to Heber Heher by Strawberry Strawberry Strawberry Straw Straw- berry road 75 Duchesne to Provo by Strawberry Strawberry Strawberry Straw Straw- berry road 1 Duchesne to Salt Lake by Strawberry road via Provo 1467 Duchesne to Salt Lake by Strawberry road via Park Ci City ty Duchesne to Colton by Indian canyon canyon P.
