Show FATHER HUNTS HUNT'S REPLY REPLY Salt Lake City June 22 1923 Editor Duchesne Courier In the Courier of May 16 appeared appeared ap appeared ap- ap a letter entitled False Impressions Impressions Impressions Im Im- Im- Im Regarding Christian Science Science Science ence over the signature of a Mr Price of or the Christian Science publication publication pubU- pubU cation committee of Utah In this letter a few statements from a speech of mine as as published iu u the Courier of or Nay May 2 were criticised I had Intended to pay no attention to the letter of Mr Price but on my recent visit to Duchesne I le learned ome orne of your readers were expecting a reply from me For this reason I ask you to publish this letter containing contaIning containing con con- a few observations concerning concerning concern concern- ing the letter latter of Mr Price A few tew of my statements were singled out as misrepresenting Christian Science Among them was this Christian Scientists have gone gane so far as to say that there is no such thing as matter and that soul or mind is everything Mr Price offers offers offers of of- fers pres presumably mably contrast with this a statement from Mrs Eddy which according to him clearly and correctly correctly correctly cor cor- sets forth the doctrine of at Science Mrs Edd Eddys Eddy's s 's words as quoted are these There Is no life Ute truth intelligence or substance in matter All is Infinite mind Spirit is the real and eternal matter matter matter mat mat- ter is the tIle unreal and temporal It If Mrs Eddys Eddy's s words wards mean anything they mean exactly what I stated For Far If there Is no o truth In m matter then matter does not exist if matter is unreal then it does not exist And if there is no truth in matter and if matter is unreal then my statement statement state state- ment of the teaching teaching- of Christian Science is proved to be quite correct viz there here Is no such thing as mat mat- matter matter ter Furthermore if spirit Is Isreal Isreal isreal real and if matter is unreal then my iny statement that soul saul or mind Is everything is likewise proved to represent correctly the teaching of af Christian Science Mr Prices Price's quotation quotation quo quo- tation from Mrs Eddy merely emphasizes emphasizes emphasizes sizes my interpretation of science it proves conclusively just what II I I- charged that Christian Scientists I deny the existence of matter and the reality of disease I Mr Price adds other statements of his own to corre correct t further the impression impression sion given by my my stat statement ment He says Christian Science teaches that the true substance or soul of th the spiritual man i is God of which man manis manis manis is the Image and likeness The reader will wUl be interested in examining this What does Mr Price mean by the spiritual man What other kind of af a man is there with which he can contrast the spiritual man Surely he does not admit a the existence of af a corporeal man for f he does then he recognizes the reali reality ty of matter and this na ua cannot do if he remains consistent with the doctrines of Mrs Eddy What does he mean mean by b- saying that the true substance of oC the spiritual man is God He has just quoted Mrs Eddy to the eff effect ct that the th the only rea reality ty possible in man is Ms is s soul In other words warda man is nothing but soul man is soul Now Naw Mr Price asserts that the soul of man is God Gad But if on the one hand haurI the soul of man be beman man and If on he other hand the soul of man be God then man is is' God Gad Things eq equal al to the same thing are equal to each other ather Man and God Gad are one and he same saine And In th the face of this obvious conclusion Mr 1 Price asserts assert that man is the Image and likeness of God God GodIf If mans man's soul be God and if man be exclusively soul how can canman canman canman man be made In the image and likeness likeness like like- ness of God Once It is recognized that God Is distinct from fram inan man It Is comprehensible that man In so faras faras' faras far faras as as- his soul saul is concerned is created In image and likeness of God Gad But if Mr Ir Price be correct and If man be th then n to say that man is created created created cre cre- in the Image and likeness of himself How Haw can man be created In his own Image and likeness A second statement of mine which attracted Mr l Prices Price's attention was one about spiritual healing He protests that spiritual healing benot be benot benot not confused with mental healing if by this term is meant of af the mortal human or carnal mind words wards most over the body His are Interesting and significant the in influence in- in fluence of oC the mortal martal human and carnal mind mind over the body Shades of oC Mrs Eddy Does Mr Price admit the reality of the body If not nat I ask him how the mind can Influence something that Is not How can the mind Influence the body If th there re be beno beno beno no body If there be no human body then It Is wholly meaningless to re refer refer refer re- re fer to the Influence of the mind over over It ft Evidently Mr r. r Price wishes to teach the reality of the human body And It If the he body Is real then matter Is real realand and man Is not exclusively spiritual but Is in part material How does docs Mr Price reconcile such a doctrine with that taught by Mrs Eddy There is no truth or substance substance substance sub sub- stance In matter man is not material material material mate mate- rial he Is spiritual If Mrs Eddy be right Mr Price Is wrong If it Mr Price be bo right Mrs Eddy Is wrong Furthermore and torso Mr Price refers reters to the mortal human I be bemeant be bemeant or jr carnal mind What can meant by the mortal mind If mans man's mind be mortal then It dies I Mr Price thus actually teaches that mans man's mind does not survive death I How flow does this look In light of Mrs Eddys Eddy's statements Mrs Eddy contends con con- tends ends that there Is no truth or substance sub- sub stance In matter that man Is not nat material but that he ho Is spiritual On Last Page 11 FATHER R HUNTS HUNT'S REPLY From Page One Very well She further says that spirit is the real and eternal So Mrs 1 Eddy teaches that man being spiritual is eternal And yet Mr 1 Price an official spokesman of the religion founded by Mrs 1 Eddy talks about th the mortal mind of man about the mind that dies With Mrs 1 mind is eternal with Mr l Price mind is temporal Worse and furthermore How does this doctrine of the mortality o of mans man's mind appear In light of other statements of Mr 11 Price himself In Ina a previous paragraph of this same letter Mr Price stat states s that mans man's mansso so soul l is God Surely he believes that God is eternal and d not temporal If It so 50 he believes believes' that mans man's soul which he identifies identities with God is eternal And Andye ye yet in trying to to develop his conception conception concep concep- tion of Christian Science he is led to refer to mans man's mind as as' mortal as temporal as just the opposite of his previous ous statement that it is eternal Is the difficulty dI here one in Mr 1 Prices Price's manner anner of writing or 01 is it Inherent In the philosophy of ChristIan Christian Christian Christ Christ- ian Science Mr l Price found another of my statements Which he thinks gives a false impression I stated that th tha 3 cures of Christian Science are men mental till cures that tha t they they are not miraculous irac 1 U and that they are purely natural Here and aud now I reaffirm and reassert reassert reassert reas reas- sert this Mr Price seems to think I that the cures of Christian Science are performed by the infinite power of God that they are supernatural ral and that in effecting these cures the Scientists are following the precepts and example of our Lord Jesus Christ His His' reasoning seems to be something like this Jesus Christ cured many persons of their diseases Christian Science cures many persons persons per persons per per- sons of their diseases therefore Christian Christian- Science cures by the pOor power pow pow- or er of Christ and in the same same way that He cured This same reasoning might just as well be adopted by Monsieur Coue He has demonstrated ed quite dramatically ally the influence ce of the th- mind in healing He might copy the UIO claims of the Scientists and adopt their reasoning Ho might proclaim Jesus Christ cured cured many persons of their diseases I cure many persons of their diseases therefore I cure by the power of Christ and In the same way that He cured He might start a now now religion and claim that lie he is is the divine divinely appointed spokesman of ot God to lead the hu human hu- hu man race out of error and into the way of truth But fortunately for a humanity that Is easily beguiled by false falso claims of religious religions healings Mr Coue Cone has not yielded to the lie temp temp- tation He knows that there is nothing supernatural miraculous culous or religious In his his manner of healing the sick he knows that be he cures his patients through the tiro influence of mind over matter and what is of greatest greatest Importance he lie or very frankly sa says s so It u must be remembered that merely a cure is effected under under un- un der circumstances wherein some is prayIng that it is 1 to effected Godl Godi W It U does not follow Collow by the power newer of pf God
