July 2, 1957 THE DRAGERTON TRIBUNE Pare Six 4 U Gonova Steel Opened New Nitrogen Plant Top industrial figures of the nation assembled at Provo to join with key civic and business leaders of Utah for the official opening of the states newest industrial installation the nitrogen plant at U. S. Steels Geneva Works. Etate and local officials, church and industrial leaders were among the 300 guests who joined with United States Steel President Clifford F. Hood and Finance Committee Chairman Robert C. Tyson at a luncheon and tour of the new installation, first of in a major steel facility in Amer- furnished by the Company. Anhydrous ammonia is stored in two giant f Hortonspheres, each with a capaciay of 2100 tons. This product, which contains 82 per cent nitrogen, is used primarily as a fertilizer. It is also used by 5 its-kin- ica. d f The big installation utilized several Montecatini processes in manufacturing anhydrous ammonia and in producing other nitrogen products from coke oven gas. The gas which comes from Genevas 252 coke ovens is rich in hydrogen. This hydrogen is extracted from the gas and mixed with nitrogen which is separated from the air to produce the basic chemical building block, anhydrous ammonia, by the Montecatini synthesis process. The air separation and gas separation units were German-Lind- e other manufacturers of fertilizer for further processing. At the Ge- neva plant, some of the ammonia production is further refined into nitric add- - This is vital in ,the rare metals extraction industry. A third product of the plant ammonium nitrate comes from the mixture of anhydrous ammonia with hitric acid.. It is a fertilizer containing 33.5 cent per nitrogen. It is produced in the ammonium nitrate section of the new plant. One part of this area, a prilling, tower, become will Genevas probably, best known land mark as time passes by, since it is the tallest structure in Utah county. liquid ammonium nitrates- is sprayed from the top of this tower and in the fall to the floor of the tower, solidifies into prills or small granules which then are dried, . high-streng- th 13-sto-ry - coated and bagged, ready for shipment. ' The official opening of the plant follows almost three years to the day, the first announcement by President .Hood that U. S. Steel was making a study of the possible, extraction of ammonia from coke oven gas. A few months later, Mr. Chappie and the late Alden G. Roach, president of Steel Division, announced plans for construction of the plant at Geneva. In addition, the plant also makes toluene, benzene, coal tar, and other high-streng- th chemicals from coke oven gas. Sales of all U. S.
