Show u (' Tuesday, February 28, Utah Coal Production Increased During 1955 Utahs coal industry came back ducers had a &ood year. 'Demand for coal from domestic to life in 1955 with an approximate production of 6, 100, 000 tons, according to B. P. Manley, secretary, of the Utah Coal Operators Association. This production ton-ag- e was over a million tons higher than during the previous year. Weather conditions and increased industrial activity in the West aided the increased production, in his opinion, and he sees about the same rate of production this year. The increased production did not result in more miners being employed but it gave those working more days per week and consee pay. quently more emsome in were cutbacks There ployment during the year but not as marked as during the year be, take-hom- fore. consumers improved sharply over the past 12 months as did exports. Labor problems, formerly so tempestuous, appear to have ' eased. ' Miners were granted an additional $1.20 per day last September 1, and another 80 cents come April 1 of this year. Competitive position of bituminous also is improving. Its chief competitor is residual fuel oil. The oil industry has been cutting outit item by upput of this to produce runs grading refinery more gasoline and low-prof- wide-marg- in distillate. This trend speaking nationally combined with higher tanker rates which have boosted the cost of imported oil, has resulted in the highest level of residual fuel oil prices since the last year of peak coal prosperity in 1948. Natural gas also, is a major competitor, nationally, and especially here in the West. -- The production increase in 1956 however will depend on the freight rate increase of seven per cent now pending before the ICC in Washington. Mr. Manley says this increase is in addition to the 12 per cent increase granted haulers of coed in 1952. Utah coal is exported to most states in the West, with the pos- 1-- i sible exception of California. He said that the freight rate, of course, varies with certain sections of the area. As an example, he said, the increase would be 42c per ton .on lump delivered to the northwestern area of Idaho, such as Boise, Odd well, Weiser, etc. Freight rates on lump now are $5.95 per ton, and if the new increase is granted, that would mean buyers of coal would be paying $6.37 per ton. just for rates. Many Congressmen are surprised to learn that the Four Upper Basin States are paying in $22,000,000 each year. This amount will probably increase, but even if it doesnt that means that in 33 years our states themselves will contribute as much to the Reclamation Fund as the total cost of the Upper Colorado Project as authorized by the present House bill. But beyond this, the Upper Basin States will pay back in power and water revenues the entire cost of the project. WhyNotGreaseYourOwnCar?
