Show 'f Serving the Mining Area of East Carbon. Volume $900,000 Monthly Payroll 7,000 Population Per Copy DRAGERTON, CARBON COUNTY, UTAH, TUESDAY, APRIL 5, 1955 ft Sunnyside Recreational Association The Sunnyside Recreational Association, formerly Sunnyside Welfare Association, founded in 1943 by a group of civic minded men, has been instrumental in making the town of Sunnyside a better place to live. Kaiser Steel Corporation, the Miners Trading Post and their employees have annually contributed more than $5,000.00 on a voluntary basis. A board of directors, appointed by Local 9958 UMWA, Kaiser Steel Corporation and the Miners Trading Post, coordinate a program which benefits thousands of residents of the East Carbon area each year. A few of the activities sponsored by the Sunnyside Recreational Association have been the annual 24th of July celebration and rodeo, free shows for the children twice monthly, a Little League baseball team, mens baseball, a supervised summer recreation program including archery, softball, baseball, Attention, Parents This is an urgent plea from W. C. Evans, special agent of the Rio Grande Railroad, to parents of the East Carbon area: Do not le your children play around the rail road tracks. It is dangerous for children to be near rails when trains are in motion. They thoughtlessly place objects on tracks that may derail a train. The special agent is in the area attempting to ascertain who placed a number of large railway spikes on both rails near Nicks' Club the afternoon or evening o. March 22nd. A train was almos derailed at that time. - and a rifle range. A bus owned and operated by 'the organization transports hundreds of youngsters every summer to and from the swimming pool at Price. The librarian for the Sunnyside library, a. Christmas program for members families, educational films and athletic equipment for the Sunnyside schools. (A $700.00 movie projector used by the Sunnyside schools, purchased in 1951 by the organization, is available to all civic groups.) These and numerous other activities serve as an inspiration to all members supporting the Sunnyside Recreational Association. Many towns support the same type of program through direct taxation. It is indeed commend able that such accomplishments have been made possible by a com munity organization of the gen erous and farsighted residents in this area. William H. Neil Pfc. William H. Only recently an oil strike has been made in a part of Nevada which lies in the Great Salt Lake Basin area. Few of the persons who read the earlier paper were surprised by the discovery of oil in the basin area. For nearly 40 years professors and students from the college of mines and mineral industries have charted land formation of the Colorado Plateau' in southeastern Utah. One of the reasons speeding up the boom period of uranium ex ploration, and production in the Colorado Pleateau was the amoun of ready information detailing the trails and structure of the area. For 34 years and some 789 grad uates the University of Utah col lege of mines and mineral indus tries has beei working to stimu late the mining industry of Utah Members of the staff are constant ly searching for improved meth Ods of treating known materials as well as deposits of minerals coal, natural gas and petroleum, One of. the current projects is determining a more satisfactory method for treating uranium ores "Staff members are hunting meth ods for concentrating the ore. Ex tensive experimentation is also be exing done with the possibility tracting uranium by leaching. Lives of Utahns are touched reg ularly by the activities of Univer sity of Utah workers in the col lege of mines and mineral indus tries.. Most noticeable to average Utahns are public lectures, news paper articles, radio talks, televi sion programs and numerous and permanent traveling exhibits.
