Washingtons engineering career began at the age of 16 when he assisted Lord Fairfax to improve his domain on the frontier. When was Washington working along Pattersons Creek, he surveyed land which was later to be bought by Joseph Hanks, maternal ancestor of Abraham Lincoln. Historians say that the trip with Lord Fairfax did much for Washingtons character, as t accustomed him to hardship. Having lived with comfort and luxury, he had adjusted to enduring exposure, fatigue, hunger and cold upon the completion of the expedition. Simultaneously, World Brotherhood Week will be observed in all the free nations of Europe under the sponsorship of World Brotherhood, an international organization formed to eliminate hostilities caused by national, religious and cultural differences. Special religious services will be held throughout Brotherhood Week in American churches and synagogues. Brotherhood Week, first observed In 1934 when 300 communities participated, is a period of rededication to the Judaeo-Christia- n moral concept of kinship of man. Dr. Everett R. Clinchy, president of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, said recently. "It underscores our common belief that the relations between man and man, between group and group, is a moral problem. During a period. of crisis such as faces free men all around the globe, we muststrengthen our convictions in the worth and dignity of every individual as a creature of 17-2- God. In large and small communities all through the nation, the '.'.VWAW week will mobilize the forces of goodwill in vast demonstrations of understanding and respect. Schools, churches and synagogues, civic clubs, womens organizations, parent-teachassociations, farm, labor and veteran groups will participate in the observance. President Truman is honorary chairman of Brotherhood Week; Johnson, former economic sta-- ' bilization administrator and president of the Motion Picture Association of America, is general chairman. Mrs. Oveta Culp Hobby' executive of The Houston Post and war-tim- e commander of the WACS, is national chairman of the newspaper committee for BrothV.vs WV erhood Week.
