This is a good method of finding out just which crops will grow the best on your land. Factors Affecting Land Leveling (Editors Note: The following is another in a series of articles prepared by the Price office of the Soil Conservation Service regarding the protection of farmsteads and the increase in farm productivity.) Land leveling increases the value of the land upon which it is applied and as a general rule the better job of leveling put upon a field the sooner the leveling job pays off in increased yields, decreased labor and water conservation. Land leveling should not be applied indiscriminately however. Before a farmer decides to level he should know and consider the factors involved in a land leveling job. Factors to be Investigated The first requirement of a land leveling job is a soil survey to determine the soil depths and textures. Shallow soil will stand only light leveling, if any. Next, an engineering survey is needed to determine the present slopes and undulations, how to best make the layout of the field, where the cuts and fills and their depths will occur. Leveling Equipment After the above investigations have been made and are found satisfactory both financially and for the soils ability to stand a land leveling job, the farmer has to decide what equipment to do the leveling with. Any leveling is expensive, however, it pays off better to do a good job on fewer acres than a poor job on a lot of acres. Generally, large equipment will do a better and cheaper job. A carryall or some scraper that actually picks up the dirt and moves it is necessary to do a good economical leveling job. Bulldoz- - crs may be more economical if a field can be leveled with the dirt being moved only one hundred feet but generally dirt must be moved farther than this. Wheeled scrapers are more economical and do a better job. After the heavy equipment has finished moving the dirt it is generally a good practice to go over the leveled field with an Eversman, jumbo or some other type of automatic leveling float to take out the small irregularities. If the farmer intends to do the land leveling work himself with farm equipment the following ' should be considered. Generally an Eversman leveler will move dirt cheaply a short distance and if the irregularities extend for only a short distance. It is not suited to long hauls or large yardages involving large cuts or fills. An Overland, Atlas or any of the small wheeled scrapers pulled behind a farm tractor work surprisingly well, however, it requires more time to do the job. Where small or moderate yardages per acre are involved this type of equipment should be considered. Dos and Donts on Land Leveling Consider first, are you havin' trouble in wetting the; entire field during an irrigation? Do you have to leave the water set longer than necessary to wet some high spots or to fill a low spot to force the water through the furrow? Is lots of shovel work necessary? The above troubles may raise the water table dangerously close to the surface of your field or swamp your neighbors field. If you decide to level, do a good finishing job of leveling. Other farmers have proven that it pays. If you decide to level, call on an engineer to help you work out a plan. The Soil Conservation Service will furnish this as' sistance if you want it. Plans for leveling according to the field it will' save you money and headaches. ( Elect New Officers The Dragerton Campfire girls met at the home of Mrs. Mark Tratos.and elected new officers. Sharon. Killon was elected president; Judy Wright, vice president; Mary Parr, secretary; Lula Harper, treasurer; Marilyn Swanson, scribe. Other members present were Betty Doty, Barbara Rogers, Beverly Speegle, Dorothy Zomora and Dena King. Indian names were given to each member. built back up by good soil management practices. If a field' is properly leveled plus good soil management and :areful irrigation it will soon repay the costs of leveling in higher crop yields, decreased labor, conserved water and maintenance of field fertility.
