Those two young ladies, as near as the records available are' concerned, were the first of their sex from this area to enlist with the marine corps during the present national emergency. During World War II, three girls from this area served with the Women Marines including Ruth Robertson, Jean McKinnon, formerly Jean Bennett, and Mary the U. S. Marine Corps, Bianco. Sergeant Jarvie is shown handing enlistment papers to the two prior to their departure for Salt Lake City and Farris Island, South Carolina, where they will take their basic training. Hassell urges home owners and flower lovers of East Carbon to attend the garden short course which will be held at Carbon college on March 30 and 31. An outstanding program has been arranged and everyone is invited. The course is for the purpose of helping individuals beautify their homes as well as helping to beautify the community.. It is entirely free. This is a real opportunity for the people of East Carbon to hear some of the outstanding men and women in the field of flowers and landscaping. Dorothea Newbold, preesident of the Utah Associated Garden clubs, will be in attendance and will speak concerning garden clubs and garden club programs. Dr. S. W. Edgecombe of the Utah State Agricultural college will discuss perennials and annual flowers. Kenji Shiozawa, a very prominent landscape architect, will help the home owner who really wants to landscape his home grounds. The entire program as planned will not be a program designed for other counties, but it will be localized the by considering limitations we have in Carbon county which prevent many plants growing in this area; Every home owner has problems concerning landscaping needs what flowers will grow, what will grow best, and what corrective measures he can apply. Some of these questions will be answered in this garden short course March 30 and 31. A special feature of the short course will be a dinner meeting Friday evening bn March 30, in the Carbon college cafeteria. The price of $1.75 per plate has been set- for this dinner.
