(Buster) Bennett early Wednesday morning. Mr. Bennett relates that he parked his truck in the street in front of Wayne Wrights home about midnight ' and went in to talk with Mr. Wright. About three oclock while the men were talking over a cup of coffee they heard the whine of the fire siren. Upon answering a knock at the door Mr. Bennett was informed that his truck was on fire. The fire truck arrived at 3:20 and extinguished the flames. The only explanation regarding the origin of the fire offered by Mr. Bennett is that thieves or would-b- e tnieves dropped a match and ignited materials in the back of the truck. The truck box had been covered and equipped with seats for carrying men to work at the Horse Canyon mine and contained several suits, shirts, an overcoat nad other articles of belonging clothing nett to Mr. Ben- Dinner Meeting Here Wednesday Night For Lion Dignitaries Melvin B. It has been rumored that many others had planned to stay out but nothing materialized to date on this. It is still possible that many others might go out in sympathy with the idea of the Pennsylvania miners. Most of the mines in the east that are out are captive mines. Bruin Mountain Ski club officers estimated the crowd at 250 people. The overwhelming number of cars created a parking problem at the ski area until the services of the Kaiser Steel cor- porations tractor were solicited and adequate space provided. While the storm Saturday covered the road with drifted snow, it was passable and cars were able to drive directly to the tow. Excellent weather, bright sun coupled with a mild breeze, furnished the ideal conditions all skiers desire. The Kiwanis club of Sunnyside erected two comfort buildings at the site as well as a small shack next to the tow. The shack is heated and used by the skiers for warming up a bit Refreshments In the form of hot chili, hamburgers, etv were prepared by the Kiwanis group and sold in the building. Paul Turner, president of the ski club, optimistically stated that many of the people plan to return to the Bruin Mountain site each week. He said the accessibility of the area makes it more attrac-tic- e to the skiers. As a word of X caution, Mr. Turner asked that all drivers observe the warning to use their chains. While it was possible to traverse the road with out chains, many cars were stuck for long periods of time tying up other traffic. He urged that all drive carefully and wear chains and that no cars should attempt to go up the canyon after 4:00 p. m. The ski club secretary, John McFarland, indicated that a ski meet is planned for January 22 at the Bruin Mountain area. Slalom, downhill, and a short crosscountry race are planned. Events will be held for both young men and womep. All desiring to enter are urged to contact Mr. McFarland for details. Members of the Sunnyside Kiwanis club will officiate at the meet. Mr. McFarland stated that the club will meet each Monday evening at the Sunnydale Homes office and that all interested persons are invited tcr attend the meetings. The Carbon High School ski coach, P. L. Summerhays, indicated Sunday that he is planning to bring his ski classes to the Bruin Mountain area for their in- struction. The price of the ski tow has been changed to $1.00 for all those except members of the Sunnyside Welfare. area. The reason for the lay-o- ff has not been As against the redetermined. turn of the East Carbon miners, 22,000 UMW members in western Pennsylvania failed to return to work in spite of a district suggestion from President John L. Lewis that they do so. Radio announcements every half hour failed to change the mens opinion. The 22,000 miners refused to go back .because they are tired of working a few days and then being off a few days, so it was reported. These men feel, so it was announced that they plan to stay off until a contract is signed giving them a full five days a week. These brightest future of any area in the HOSPITAL CLOSING POSTPONED AS Miners Refuse To Go Dragerton Resident Eastern Carbon, county has the six-ho- ur session. Many points were brought up for discussion and changes made in the existing contract One of the most important features of this contract is that it is" but a temporary contract that will be in existence only until the UMW Health and Welfare comes back into operation. At that point this contract becomes null and void. At any time in the future that the health and welfare might go out of existence this contract will come back into operation. Thus this contract that is now Being negotiated is but a temporary several months. The question in the individual mind is; Are we getting the most for our money that is possible to obtain under any setup? The individual wants to know if any other coal community is getting as much or more than we are going to get In asking the hospital management what they feel about their plan and other plans in operation in other coal mining communities the local hospital management is of the Impression that no other setup can give or are giving nearly as much to the individual and their families as the local hospital and staff are giving. No one has ever questioned the fact that the government built and equipped the Dragerton hospital to be one of toe finest in the country. The present staff at the hospital has one.
