Sun-nysid- erton New Kaiser Mine Tests Show Ample Reserves East Carbon Coal To Supply Fontanas Need In New Expansion Program For Over 40 Years Extensive drilling tests have proved a new source of more than 30,000,000 tons of high grade coking coal in the rich coal mining areas of East Carbon, officials of Kaiser Co.. Inc., announced Sunday. The company, it was disclosed, has already started studies of facilities to open and operate the properties of supply rently supplying the requirements of the Fontana plant and Geneva Steel Cb. plants at Geneva and Ironton, Utah. Located on Lease It is located on Kaiser-hel- d properties of 2560 acres leased last year from the U. S. department of interior and 480 acres leased from the state of Utah. The drilling tests disclosed coal seams of 11 to 14 feet in thickness. The size of the seams, the company spokesman said, insure low mining costs. Pending the opening and of a new mine the Kaiser steel plant at Fontana will continue to obtain its coking coal requirements from a leased mine m the same vicinity. ' Spurs Plant Expansion The current expansion program of the Fontana plant is expected to "be' completed by the ehd Of this year. The coke ovens are scheduled for completion in August the new blast furnace in October and the two new mills by the end of the year. The blast furnace will have a capacity of 1200 tons daily ind approximately doubles the plants present pig" iron production capacity. With the new facilities in operation the ingot capacity of the plant will be approximately tons per year. and Mrs. Tally Evans are leaving June 25 for Omaha, Nebraska, where they will visit their daughter, Hanna. Mr. PUBLIC SERVICE CHARGES BECOME EFFECTIVE JULY 1 The John W. Galbreath & Co. issued the statement Wednesday, June 15 that effective July 1, 1949, there will be a charge to each property owner of approximately $3.00 per month for the present services which are now being without charge. These services are street lighting, police and fire protection, water and trash and rubbish collection. The above statement reaffirms what George R. Galbreath stated at the two incorporation meetings, which were held in April and May, 1949 that it was not the in tention "of the John W. Galbreath & Co. to continue to operate the townsite facilities beyond July 1, 1949 without making a nominal charge for the services rendered. George R. Galbreath stated on many occasions, reported the John W. Galbreath office, that their company is willing to pay their proportionate share of these costs for the houses that they still own. Under an incorporation setup, the Galbreath company will still be required to pay their share of the cost on the real estate that they own. Thus beginning July 1, the Galbreath company will charge each home their share bf the cost until the services are taken, over by officials under an incorporated city. The bouses which are Still being rented by John W. Galbreath & Co., will be paid by the owner and not by the tenant. Under an incorporation, the city will get certain state funds (road and liquor money) wnich can be used for the operation of the city. It was estimated by persons who are familiar with city financing that the net cost of operating this city with its present services will be approximately $1.75 per house per month if the state funds are used. A community has to be incorporated to get these funds. If unincorporated, the funds go into the general county fund. This is a strong financial reason for incorporation. SEVEN TEST HOLES FOR FUTURE DAM SITE MADE IN SUNNYSIDE CANYON Water Study Committee To Hold Meeting To Determine Future Course For Water Solution Expansion facilities of the East Carboh water area continues to move forward with each passing day. At the present time the water engineer, Win Templeton is drilling seven holes to determine the soil conditions in Sunnyside Canyon approximately three miles beyond the towrn of Sunnyside near the fork in the Grassy Trail Creek. The purpose of the test holes is to find out if the soil will hold water, and not let it all seep through the ground. The second purpose is whether the soil will support a dam at that particular site. The drilling of the holes started on June 1 and were finished on June 18. The general accepted opinion that there is ample water for all present use and for any known expansion. The contemplated problem was to-- get it-- when it was plentiful for use during a dry is season. The East Carbon Water Study Committee visited the site of the drilling last week' Included in S. O. Harper, the group were: consulting engineer for the Kaiser interests, Farny Farnsworth of the Utah Fuel Co., Ray Bowen of the Geneva Steel Co. and Gerald Galbreath of the John W. Galbreath & Co. The Water Study Committee will hold a meeting as soon as the test hole data is completed to determine the method of financing and the procedure for the future. An interesting fact is that the Sunnyside water shed is In excellent condition since the grazing of cattle, sheep and goats was stopped. The grass there is over a foot tall, which is very helpful in holding the water and and in slowing down the run-of- fs during storm periods and the snow V e Per Copy 5c Dragerton, Utah, June 21, 1949 Volume 2 coking coal for the expansion of the Henry J. Part of Expansion These facilities are part of a $35,000,00 expansion program which will include a new hot rolled strip mill and a new electric weld pipe mill. .Company officials estimated that the 30,000,000 tons reserve would supply the two blast furnaces with coal for 40 years. Tests at the plant, a company spokesman said, have demonstrated the high coking quality of the new deposit. The new coal deposits, the announcement said, lie in the famous Books Cliffs field which is cur- l-nbun- Eastern Carbon county has the brightest future of any area in the Intermountain area melting season. The water shed area should continue to improve with the years as long as no grazing edict is in effect, thus continuing to held the water problem.
