Youth Activity Club House Plans Are Set Rotary Club Is Taking Part Dragerton Dormitory Rebuilding It Into Modem Club House For Youth The youth in East Carbon are going to get a club house. The East Carbon Rotary club under the presidency of Emery Olsen is sponsoring a club hotfse to take care of the needs for s, a space for the Boy Scouts, the Girl Rethe serves, the Geneva Boys club and all the other youth organizations. The John W. Galbreath & Co. through George Galbreath has donated the part of the Dragerton Dormitory formerly Teen-Ager- used as a dining room and kitchen for this purpose. The UMW 8003 was originally given the building but because of Union regulations were unable to accept. However, the union did state that they would cooperate in every way possible to help in this youth activity project. The youth activity committee of the Rotary club under the chairmanship of Dr. Frank Colombo plan to move the building to a spot in the vicinity of the clinic Remodeling plans are building. in process so that a complete club house will be the result are arrangements to Included take care of the many various activities of the youth organizations. This is a very large program and requires the cooperation of the many groups in the community. Already many units have offered to help realizing the needs of the children. The first money raising project is a dance and raffle to be held on Saturday, May 28 in the Dragerton gym. Dr. Fred Jones is chairman of this group. Jimmie Darts orchestra will play. The tickets - for the dance are $1.50 per couple. The Dragerton Tribune has ofof all subscription fered 90 money raised to the Geneva Athletic Association under the presidency of Claud Bly. The Geneva Association will give very active support to the new club house. One of its supported clubs, the Geneva Boys club will make use of the club house when it is finished. Tickets for the dance are already in the hands of the Hotary members and are being distributed to other groups. The Geneva Athletic Association is around selling subscriptions as their part to raise money for the youth ac- tivity. It has been tentatively estimated that the final cost of the new club house will run in the vicinity of $7500 00. It is planned to pay this of over a period of several years. ' Columbia Students Take Four Day Tour Of Northern Utah V East Carbon Youth Activity Benefit Dance Set For May 28 In Dragerton PTA Testimonial Program To Be Held Thursday Activities Close The recently elected officers of the Dragerton Elementary meeting held Thursday, May 12 in the gym. Mrs. Edward Potts, the Carbon county president was present and conducted the installation. The following Mrs. officers were installed: Larry Stephens, president, Mr. Hansen, first vice president; Mrs. Perez, second vice president; Mrs. Mrs. Lee Cottrell, secretary; Worthington, corresponding secretary and Mrs. Curley Monroe, treasurer. The program for the evening consisted of a prayer by Mrs. Monroe, a talk on future education in connection with the parents and teachers by Mrs. Mrs. Stephens Larry Stephens. urged the parents with children to work together with the organizations of the community in bet tering our surroundings and improve our future leadership. The objects of the were given by Mrs. Potts. Music was furnished by Mrs. Allred, a first grade teacher and by Mrs. Bagnell, a fifth grade teacher. Mrs. King gave an interesting reading. When the program was dismissed light refreshments were served. Carbon High Tackles Region 8 Champs Thursday At Helper Carbon high school will play South high of Salt Lake City, the region 8 champions this coming Thursday at 2:90 p.m.' in Helper. for the state This is a baseball crown. Carbon is undefeated so far this year with seven victories and ho losses. An outstanding game is anticipated. This will be the toughest opponent of the year for Carbon. Carbon is in good physical shape and will be trying hard for victory. semi-fina- ls East Carbon .Rotary Gives Scholarship The JEast Carbon Rotary club has inaugurated a policy of giving two scholarships a year to East Carbon students. The scholarships are to the Carbon Junior The recipients of this college. year award are to Sylvia Jensen and Jerry Crawford. The awards are given on the basis of scholastic standing, school citizenship and activity and need. The cost of each award is $61.00. With Dinner Party 70 students Approximately from the East Carbon junior high school will receive a testimonial leave at the final school assembly for the year on this coming Thursday night . The glee clubs, choruses and bands will all participate in the program. This year there is no formal graduation. The Board of Education has changed the procedure. Just the same 70 students will leave the East Carbon school after having completed the first 10 years of their schooling. Dragerton Family Seriously Hurt In Head On Collision In a head on collision at Spring Glen Sunday night the Coopride family of Dragerton were seriousMrs. Rachel Coopride ly hurt. and a son, Russell, are in the Dragerton hospital. Mr. Coopride was hurt but injuries do not appear to be as serious as the mother and son. The other car was driven by Bob Williams of Price. The occupants of the other car suffered injuries but not' as critical as those of the Coopride family. Mrs. Archie Morrison Conducts Poppy Sale The poppy side in East Carbon under the chairmanship of Mrs. Archie Morrsson was a very successful one. The exact amount raised is not yet known but early figures report a substantial The entire proceeds from the sale go to the disabled veterans who made the poppies. Three Hundred Seventy Students Take Part In First East Carbon Track-Fiel- d Meet Three hundred and seventy students turned out to take part in the first annual East Carbon Field and Track meet. Boys and girls took an equal part in the activities.' Nordell Allred, head of the boys physical education department and Mrs. Mary Crawford, head of the girls deartment had a well organized program planned. Every student on hand .that was able to compete took part in the events. ' 8020 to Culiura First Year P-T- Jimmie Darts orchestra will play for the East Carbon benefit dance which will be held on Saturday, May 28. The proceeds from the dance will go toward the new youth club house fund. The dance will be held at the Dragerton gym with the starting time at 9:00 p.m. This very noteworthy project deserves the wholehearted cooperation of everyone. It is for the children of East Carbon who at present do not have the same facilities that the children of most other communities have. Tickets are in the hands of all Rotary members and are being distributed to many other groups and to business firms for sale. At the night of the dance a big raffle is being set up. Tickets for this are now being printed. The local merchants are donating prizes to be given away. It is expected that a substanital amount of money will be raised at this first public project for an initial payment on the club house. UMW East Carbon Jr. High For Coming Year Hold Nominations First Meeting In June UMW 8020, Kaiser Mine, is getting set to hold its two year election this coming month. Nominations will be made the first of the month with the election held at the second meeting in the same month. The present officers4 are Frank Sunter, president, Doug Tollis, vice president, Anthony Durney, recording secretary, Frank Sacco, financial secretary and Milt Williams, treasurer. Tne pit committee is composed of John Maxey, Ross Porre and Glen Delaney. On the hospital committee is Frank sunter, Anthony Durney and Frank Sacco. The safety committee is composed of Frank Sacco and Hebrew Ward with Doug Tollis acting as alternate. The doorkeeper is. Henry Zaremba. Milt Williams and Frank Sacco are holders over officers from the previous two year term. UMW 8020 was organized in 1943 when the Kaiser Mine went into operation during the war During the lunch period hot dogs and pop were sold for five cents to the students and supervisors. In the 50 yard dash for the boys, Mike Anastakis took first place for the 7th grade boys. In the 75 yard dash for the 8th grade boys, Frank Nittsuma won the event in 11 seconds. In the 10th grade division Arlen Newell won the 100 yard dash in 12 seconds. Harry Abeyta took top honors in the 100 dash with a mark of 11.5 seconds to win out over all com- petitors. For the 7th grade high jjimp-er- s, Mike Anastakis with a leap of 4 feet 5 inches won. In the 8th grade division Veloy Varner with a jump of 4 feet 8 inches came home in first place. Harry Abeyta won top honors with a 5 feet 6 inch jump. Paul Tratos won over other 10th graders with a 5 feet 4 inch mark. Johnny Kranker of the 7th grade made a toss of 212 feet 6 inches for first place. The traveling prize was phine Tomsich, Virginia Trujillo, won by Mrs. McCourt (Continued on Page Four) Coke Kaiser-Fraz- er Ovens Are About Ready To Shut Down From all indications the Kaiser-Frazcoke ovens are just about ready to suspend operations at the present time. No information is obtainable on the outcome of official discussions. Coal bins are almost empty. It is highly possible that the .ovens will be operated by a concern other than the Kaiser-FrazCo. Yet the present coke market is such that there is very little demand for coke. This market can be developed but it takes time. The logical conclusion is that the crews at the Kaiser-Frazovens will find the job market at the ovens scarce for the time being. er er er clc CULTURA FIRST On May 12 at the Good Shepherd Hall, activities for Cultura club were brought to a close with a gay dinner party, ending a successful club year. The dinner theme Vacation was cleverly worked out in the place cards and table decorations. Poppies and tulips featured the club colors of red and white. A musical program was presented by Mrs. Mike Mihalik. In charge of arrangements for the party were: Mrs. Bill Daniels, chairman; Mrs. Gerald Tobey, Mrs. Walt Anderson, Mrs. Ray Bowen, Mrs. Emery Olsen, Mrs. Dwight Wadleigh and Mrs. Nephi Gunderson. The clubs new officers were installed at the April meeting, but due to her absence at that meetMrs ing, the new president, Frank V. Colombo was not installed until the night of the dinner party. Mrs. Jack Clifford, the extended retiring president, thanks to the outgoing officers and committees for their cooperation and wished the new officers a successful' club year. The group left on Thursday, spent the day seeing Timpanogas and the Provo area. They stayed all night in Provo, leaving the next day for Salt Lake City, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Volume 2 Eastern Carbon , April, 1949. : ADDRESS Number 46 Confusion Reigns Af Town Meeting Sunday Incorrect Interpretation On Law And Petition Causes Furor Among Assembly Confusion reigned at the Dragerton town meeting Sunday. An incorrect interpretation was placed on the petition of incorporation. This compeltely upset the group of 79 that on hand to discuss the preceding ' and to was Title 15, Chapter 2, Section 1, Petition To County Commissioner When the inhabitants of any part of any county not embraced within the limits of any city shall desire to be organized into a city, they may apply therefore to the board of county commissioners, by petition in writing signed by not less than one hundred of the real property taxpayers who are qualified electors of the territory to be embraced in the proposed city. Such petition shall describe the territory proposed tobe embraced in such city, and shall have annexed thereto an accurate map or plat thereof, shall state the name proposed for such city, and shall be accompanied with satisfactory proof of the number of inhabitants within the territory embraced In said limits. Section 2, Election Notice Ballots When such petition shall be presented the board of county commissioners shall forthwith designate the class of the proposed city, and in cities of the first or of the second class shall designate the boundaries of the municipal wards thereof, and shall fix the time and place within the boundaries of such proposed city at which the election may be held to determine the matter. Such election shall be held and conducted as nearly as may be in the same manner as provided by law for conducting general elections. Before such election is held the board of county commissioners shall give notice by publication in some newspaper published within said limits, if there is one, at least once a week for four successive weeks, but if there is no newspaper published therein, then by posting notices for at least four weeks in five public places within said limits. Such notices shall contain a statement' of the contents of the petition, a description of the territory proposed to be incorporated, and the officers to be elected, and shall also .designate the time and place at which the election shall be held. They confirmed the interpretation that at the election, the electors would be able to vote as to whether they want to be incorporated not or The members at the meeting voted to adjourn until next Sunday at 3:00 p.m. A second motion was passed requesting that the county commissioners make a detailed study of the petition and the law and explain to .the .meeting next Sunday exactly what it is all about The petition that the electors of Dragerton signed is also shown in this weeks Dragerton Tribune. It was expressed by the chairmen and by the assembly that the entire town should turn out to nominate the candidates for the various offices. It is of vital interest to everyone in the town.
