The leaders of the local industries were there to discuss the future of East Carbon. The school board officials were on hand to give their picture of the necessity of buildings at various points in the county and the condition of the financial resources of the board in relation to building. The purpose of the meeting was to help clear the deck for future action. Graham opened the meeting that was attended by over 150 people. Dr. Colombo was introduced and acted as moderator during the course of the discussion. One very important point, Dr. Colombo mentioned, was the fact that many people in other parts of the county felt that East Carbon was not an established community. Mr. Connell, Kaiser-FrazCoke Ovens, Mr. Farnsworth of the Utah Fuel company, Mr. Heers of the Kaiser company and Mr. Hicks of the Geneva Mines all gave their own ideas of the future of East Carbon. Everyone of these leadprs stated definitely that the future was indeed as bright as any area in the country. With the steel industry now firmly established in the west there was no question but what this area- with its coking coal would continue to expand with the steel industry. Even at the- present time the payroll and the coal production of East Carbon is approximately counof all Carbon-Emer- y 50 ties. It was also their impression that the ups and downs in East Carbon would be much less than in other parts of the country. Mr. Harmon, superintendent of education, stated the position that the school board was in stressing the fact that the county had been over 18 years paying off the P-T- A er - bonded indebtedness of $800,000. There is a sinking fund at present of $130,000. This is added to in the amount fif $65,000 each year: A study had been made showing that additional facilities were needed. However no allocation has been made by the school board and none will be made until a countywide survey can be ascertained .Any building will mean the necessity of a bond issue to be voted on by the people. The limit by law of a bond issue is $1,000,000. This will allow the building and lf equipping of two and schools of 12 rooms each. Mr. Harmon said he was glad to come to East Carbon and discuss the school problems and to seek their help in solving them. Mr. Peacock and Mr. Shurtz of the school board were present. Mr. Shurtz spoke on the problems confronting the school board and the neeessity for a program to satisfy, the needs of the entire county. The schools in Price and Helper need relief and that many surveys and investigations have been made toward a solution. Additional population in East Carbon will necessitate relief in this- area. Present legislation in both Congress and the Utah assembly may help to solve this issue. East Carbon will definitely get an opportunity to present its needs when the time comes to initiate a building program. Mrs. Graham introduced a motion to have the East Carbon go on record requesting the state department of education to make an impartial survey of the needs of Carbon County and to present one-ha- - P-T- A their recommendations. tion was passed. Kids were riding on roller skates or knuckling down to a game of marbles. Members of the Dragerton Gun Club, after a couple months of inactivity due to bad weather, came out with guns blazing, and the sky above the local trap grounds was full of lead and powdered pigeons. The new club will be more democratic and enticing to the shooters. The program Mr. Rossman has in mind includes more efficient administration of the club, more active participation in shoots, and includes a program of gradually building and improving on the local grounds. - Jerry th generously donated a club house that will be moved to the trap grounds within the next few days. New members are invited, and urged to get in on the fun of these weekly shoots. The Dragerton Gun Club was one of the first to enter the Salt Lake Tribune Telegraphic Trap-shoo- t. The shoot will be held for eight consecutive Sundays, start ing March 27. After the eight weeks on the home trap grounds, three members will be chosen from the local club to go to Salt Lake for a shoulder to shoulder with man competition squads from an expected 85 gun clubs from five intermountain states. Expansion of the electric power and light industry portends an enlarging need for bituminous coal. Consumption for making electricity is expected to exceed 100 million net tons a year by 1951; in 1947 the industry consumed 86 million net tons. The National Coal' Association is fostering a program for inducing young men, especially coal miners sons ,to become coal mining engineers.
