The scratched ballot is a convenient way of voting for those who want to support a preponone derance of candidates on ticket and only one or two on another. To cast this type of ballot the voter places a cross in the circle beneath the name and emblem of the party he is supporting. He then goes down to the name or names of candidates of another party whom he wishes to support and places a cross in the squares after their names. It is not necessary, under the present law, to draw a line against whom he is candidates. He should be careful not to vote for more candidates for the multiple offices than are to, be elected for if he does his vote for these offices cannot be counted. Mark Only Six For example six judges are to be elected in the Third district, if the voter marks seven candidates on the two tickets the election judges jiannot determine which one he didnt intend to vote for and so must throw out the ballot so far as the office of district judge is concerned. But this er- - The ballot, howscratching. ever, is not invalidated if a lme is drawn through the name of the scratched candidate. Must Draw Lines But there is one case in which it is necessary to draw lines through the names of some candidates and mark crosses after the names of others. If the scratched ballot voter scratches for multiple office candidates he must then cross out an equal number of candidates on the ticket which he voted at the top of the ballot. For example when( the voter places a cross in the circle underneath his party name and emblem he votes for all the district judges of that party unless some are scratched out Run Against Field If he votes for two candidates on the other party ticket without drawing a line through the names of two candidates on his own ticket he is in effect voting for eight candidates. The judges cannot know which two on his ticket he intended to scratch and so cannot count the ballot for any of the' district judge candidates. If a voter marks a cross under a party emblem and then out a candidate on scratches that ticket without markmg for candidate on the corresponding another ticket, the ballot will not be counted for that particular office. But failure to vote foi a full list of officers on the ballot will not invalidate the vote for those who are marked. own AT THE GET YOUR RUBBER FOOTWEAR ROW! Columbia.
