Lewis seek a general wage increase, shorter work week, increased welfare and retirement fund, guaranteed pay or days of work, free supplies, higher vacation pay and improved safety conditions in the 1949 contract. Just how these things were to be accomplished was left to a policy committee with the aid of 601 resolutions from which the specific demands could be drafted. These proposals urged general pay increases up to $3 or 30 per cent a day, a guaranteed wage up to $15 per day and $75 a week for 52 weeks, a boost In tha operators contribution to the welfare fund from 20 cents to 40 cents per ton, a hike in the annual vacation pay from $100 to $250, and a reduction in the work week to five days of six or seven hours each. Lewis promised the miners he and the committee would do the best they could to get these conditions in the new contract, Current contracts run until next June 30 but Lewis has the right to open talks for a new agreement on 30 days notice. Lewis asserted in his closing address that the politician" who recently said that the act at least gave labor the right to organize hasnt even read the act He did not indicate whether h e meant Governor Thomas E.
