His working stars, daytime series is back on the air, having been replaced for a summer period by Fred Waring CBS-TV- Monday-through-Frid- and all his Pennsylvanians, performing from r ay 1 1 Shawnee-on-Delawar- e. And the Wednesday night panel shpw, "Ive Got a Secret," also a CBS attraction, has Moore back at the helm and steering his customary informal course. .. g In the battle for ratings, the nighttime stanza is something oT'a phenomenom. Although it has always employed what might be termed a "low pressure" format, Ive Got a Secret" has been one of the evening shows appearing most consistently in the top ten or fifteen, often outranking far more elaborate productions. Progrdm popularity analysts give Moores effortless style before the cameras much of the credit for the, unpretentious quiz shows steady . never-ceasin- following. ri - Moore evidently believes in letting entertainment take its natural course, and that philosophy can also be seen in action during the daytime series. It was Moore who offhandedly remarked that it would be a thoughtful gesture to send a nickel to a Michigan wo man. This suggestion, which he says came "off the top of his head," caused some two million viewers to deposit nickels in the mail, with the' staggering result that the lady received $100,000 in cold cash. five years ago, GarEver since he went on CBS-Try Moore has been making his viewers partners in the fun, and he must have felt that way about his years of work in radio, too. At the outset of his network radio career, he complained on an open mike that could remember his name, which actually Is Thomas Garrison Morfit He conducted a contest in which the audience was asked to rename him, ,and thus was born Garry Moore. By way of keeping the proceedings lively, AAoore was a pioneer in establishing the .present 'vogue of walking shorts for men, often appearing on camera in them, complete with coat to match, when such garb was novel. He is an avid sailor, spending his vacation period in his own sail boat on the coastal waters about New York and New England.
