Leslie B. Worthington, Columbia-Geneva president, announced r, appointment of Stanley H. a veteran mine authority to direct the test activity, which is known as the Atlantic City project after a ghost mining town near the site. Mr. Worthington reported that work is well under way on driving a mine tunnel, for extraction of ore samples. These are being shipped to the laboratories of Oliver Iron Mining Division of U. S. Steel, at Duluth, Minnesota, for testing. The test tunnel has ben driven to a point some 200 feet Cohl-meye- -- into "the deposit, Mr. Worthington reported. It is planned to extend this tupnel another 500 feet in the next few weeks. The tunnel work is being done by Centennial Development Company, of Eureka, Utah. . On the basis of results from the test work to be carried on for the balance of this year, decision will mine be made as to a large-scal- e operation and crushing and facilities that will be needed because of the quality of the ore. If the project is carried out, this development would be the highest altitude large-scal- e iron mining operation in the United States. It is located 8,300 feet above sea level, near the point where the historic Oregon Trail crossed the Continental Divide. The precise location is in Fremont County, 26 miles south of Lander, the county seat bene-ficiati- on , Manager of the project, Mr. Cohlmeyer is a native of Illinois and a graduate of the University of Illinois in mining engineering. Appointed assistant to the project was Carl W. Robertsin, who served in the mining field in various types of community relations activity. Mr. Cohlmeyer, after five years of service in Alaska, the Aleutians-- , and New Guinea with Army Corps, pf Engineers, has served in a wide range of activity in the mining field. He spent two years with a lead zinc firm in Wisconsin, and then two years as field engineer for a mine machinery firm in the midwest. ' Next followed two years as a consulting mine engineer in Chicago, thn a period of more than three years as assistant project manager of a copper development at White Pine, Michigan. He joins U. S. Steel from Western-Knap- p Engineering Co., of San Francisco where he served as project engineer and chief estimator. This firm is doing preliminary en gineering on the Wyoming proSteel. ject for Columbia-Genev- a Mr. Robertson is a native of Sheboygan County, Michigan. Like Mr. Cohlmeyer, he spent three years with the White Pine Copper Company, where he was in charge of community relations. If this phoject is carried forward as a result of the test work, the development will provide an additional source of supply forthe Qeneva Works plant of Columbia-Genev- a Steel Division near Provo,, Utah.
