Show Page Six Another special bond election which will determine the desires of the voters of Carbon county regarding the issue of construct- ing a new courthouse is scheduled for Tuesday, June 12, according to action taken by the county commissoiners at their last regular meeting. This election will seek authority from the voters to issue general obligation bonds of the county in the amount, of $370,000 for the purpose of erecting a new courthouse on the site of the present building. This same issue was placed before the voters November 15, T955, and was defeated by a vote of 596 to 515. However, in the election of last year the site of the new courthouse was tentatively announced as the corner of First North and Carbon Avenue. Since that time the commissioners reportedly have been convinced that the location of the intended courthouse was the big issue in the defeat and they feel, after meeting, with groups in various sections of the county, that the people are in favor of a new courthouse but would rather have it located where it is now. Upon this basis, and tl(jp fact that the county is sorely in need of larger accommodations as well as a safer building, the commissioners have taken the legal action necessary to call another special election. The present building, they point out, due to faulty foundation is in a serious and dangerous condition. The building was condemned in 1947 by the engineering firm of Caldwell, Richards and Sorenson. This was confirmed in 1955 by Glenn L. Enke, consulting structural engineer of Provo. The county has accumulated $212,433.70 in the .building and construction reserve fund. This was done when the statutes provided a one-mi- ll levy for this purpose. However, the statute was subsequently repealed and the . county cannot now levy for this purpose. The last year this levy was in effect was 1948. The county has $123,876.43 of this fund invested in United States treasury notes. The new building will cost approximately $500,000 and with the county jail facilities and other furnishings, the completed building will cost approximately ft . The county commissioners ask approval of this bond issue which can be paid off, both principal and interest, with an additional levy of one mill in the county tax levy for a period of ten years, at which time the levy will be reduced one mill for two years and both the courthouse bond issue and the hospital bond issue will be paid with no further levy made for bonds or interest. For the purpose of individual this calculation, would amount to $1.00 for each $1,000 of tax valuation.
