Ernest Bourne, Utah Safety Council Executive Secretary, is the Utah coordinator. We are hoping, by means of every public information device possible, to persuade the driving public to discard the in a hurry and me, first driving attitude which cause so many serious and fatal traffic accidents during the summer period of heavy traffic and vacation driving, Mr, Bourne ' explained. During a similar period last year, 59 persons were killed in Utah traffic mishaps, or an overage of more than one death every J continue nt, to make safety the main project of the year. After the matters of business were completed, the evening was given over to games and dancing under the direction of LaRene Petersen, recreatiop chairman. The Council, in cooperation with the farm and home freezer sections of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, this month is renewing the summer campaign which last year was credited with reducing such deaths to 11 after a high of 29 in 1953. May through September have proved to be the critical months for such tragedies. Summer means outdoor play, and discarded airtight cabinets with locks or hinges intact provide enticing hiding places. Since the average age of . victims is five years old, the prob lem is one of absolute protection by adults, the Council believes Children of that age cannot be expected to recognize hazards and act with caution. For that reason the spearhead of the campaign at the local level with cooperation in is the many communities from schools, local safety councils, Boy and Girl Scouts, county agents and community health departments. Material for the campaign includes an educational data sheet outlining the problem, giving citi zens a plan of action, and telling how to make discarded cabinets harmless. Summarized, these instructions are : - 1. Remove the door if refrigerator is. abandoned. 2. If only temporarily out of use, the refrigerator should be faced against a wall, or or the door securely , removed, fastened with wire,, rope or pad Prices Slashed ! Prices Slashed!
