But in the en I- - decided that, with real fireworks likely to break out in Berlin this winter, I ought to take a look at thiags beforehand, so I got steamship reservations for Europe and went through the red tape of an American military government permit to visit Germany. When the sailing date rolled around, however, I Just didn't get en the ship. I just stayed right at home and enjoyed the Maryland countryside. Thats what I did during all of f my vacation just enjoyed my home and let General Clay worry about the Russians. Only time I left Maryland was to take two trips into the District of Columbia and one trip Into the neighboring state of Delaware. I might note in passing something obvious to most lady readers that e vacation didnt this go down too well with Mrs. P. After all, when youve kept house, - cooked and planned meals for a year, it's only natural to want to let a hotel manager worry over - the- - food and the servant problem during your husbands vacation. However, Mrs. P. was a good sport, and, among other things, enjoyed her garden, especially one plot of lawn she had worked hard to keep green and on which we sometimes played deek tennis. This la the point where the pigs came in. It was, ef coarse, my fault. 1 had seen them reaming around loose, and I had been warned by the lady whe Is much rlghter than I am that they might descend on the lawn. However, they were such nice little pigs, pod they so obviously enjoyed their freedom, that 1 put off catching them for a day. That day turned the tide of my vacation. That evening the pigs decided to play deck tennis. I don't know which of them won, but I know I lost In SO minutes that lawn pride of Mrs. Ps heart - looked like plowed field. , Pip Up". .. v shown by the of the southern tier under deliberate goading of Henry THE - 7 r t 1 - V V'f FORSAKES SOCIETY . . . Hi For ulterior reasons, principally treason or a milder form of treason amounting to a lingering, disappointed faith in Russia and in Roosevelt, Wallace commands a minor following in a few eastern cities and, of course, in Hollywood. The southern people, of purer and incomparably finer loyalty, might have been understood, though not so readily pardoned, bad some angry gang tumbled the cops aside and lynched him. The worst they did, however, was to throw a few eggs and tomatoes and even this' harmless protest was the expression of only a few exuberant crackers arbitrarily classified as trash. i The custom of throwing eggs and garden truck at persona who appeal for publio favor has dwindled in the years since the Cherry Sisters coyly strung a net from the proscenium, but it was standard practice not so iong ago, and never harmful. TOM. A. , the Wallace is a reproach to the manners of the rabble of the cities up North. The southern people, contrary to the slanders of a small element of inferiors envious in the City of New York, are, day by day, the politest that we have. Their superficial manners are pretty and fearsome as they mask an alacrity to fight lot cause, and their patience is seen to be majestic under dire provocation. The conduct of these maligned but superior citizens In the presence of the drooling mountebank who howled for war but cowered In Washington while sapling boys from the high school campus were mangled overseas, was an honor to their civilization. In a comparable situation in the Bronx, the intruder would have been beaten to death bn for the strong intervention ot the New York police. And they would have saved him only to suffer the bigotry of some Pilate who would have stretched an ear to the mob outside and packed him off to prison for inciting riot.
