Recent Bride You Are American 'v ' ' , J- f VELOY VARNER Veloy Varner Gets Appointment To Military Academy Congressman Douglas B. String-fello(R.,Utah) announced today that he was forwarding his recommendations to the Department for Defense for nominees to attend the military academy at West Point Among these nominees is Veloy J. Varner of Columbia, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Varner. Mr Varner is one of the three principal appointees. His first alternate is Brent McAffee of Kamas and the second alternate is Michael Blaes of Ogden. Other principal appointees are Jerry Dee Hansen, Hyrum and n Madsen, Ephriam. Other al ternates are Thomas Glen Alex w Ar-ly- ander, Ogden, Jerry Lee Hamilton, Mt. Pleasant, Paul Robert Sondrup, Ogden, and Herbert Arnold Adamson, Brigham City. TJhe young men nominated to fill these vacancies were selected as a result of a competitive Civil Service examination conducted in Utah on May 4. Normally appoint- ments to the military or naval academies are made in the fall of each year, but Congressman had the opportunity Stringfellow to appoint three persons to fill vacancies which were created when nominations made by former Congressman Walter K. Granger failed to pass the entrance requirements for admittance. But many of the younger ones and some of the older Americans have not heard or do not remember the eloquent voice of a truly gfeat American of a neighboring s.ate and of the last generation. William E. Borah was a senator from Idaho. He had such influence and was so highly respected by the people of both parties in Idaho that for many years his senate tenure was never in jeopardy. He vvas known as the Lone Wolf' because he stood on principle and of course this meant that he stand alone on many issues. This alone position had no fear for him. He w&s well equipped with the mental capacity and the moral courage to fight for the fundamental principles that has underlaid Americas greatness. He was the intellectual core around which centered the successful opposition to Americas entering the League of Nations. I am going to quote from the final speech given by Borah in the Senate of the United States. In his final talk he gave the reasons why he thought America should not enter into Europes affairs. His fears have been well born out by the developments during the last few years. If we enter this league, "We are in the midst of all of the affairs of Europe. We have entangled ourselves with all European concerns. We have joined in alliance with all the European nations which have thus far joined the league, and all nations which may be admitted to the league. We are sitting there dabbling in their affairs and intermeddling in their concerns. In other words, Mr. Presisdent and this comes to the question which is fundamental with us we have forfeited and surrendered, once and for all, the great policy of no intangling alliances upon which the strength of this Republic has been founded for one hundred fifty years.
