Show Rapper Kanye West performs during day one of the Outside Lands music festival at Golden Gate Park superb music f T ! r J7 JALEN I JONES ? JalenDSN Check out our j coverage of j Mr. Dixie tonight at There was much speculation of who exactly Pablo was after DixieSunNews.com t Kanye West changed the title of his seventh studio album for the fourth time. It couldve been Pablo Picasso, Pablo Escobar, or maybe even Pablo Sanchez (you know, from the Backyard Sports series). West finally delivered Feb. 14 after many false promises of his albums release date, and everyone in the world stopped to hsten together. On his Twitter, Kanye initially drew the parallel that Pablo refers to the Apostle St. Paul, and West sees himself as some sort of a messenger for our generation. With this (along with many other tweets), people immediately started to think West had completely lost his noggin, and he was crazy in the head. Even myself, being the West fan that I am, began to think the same. I was extremely skeptical of what in the world the direction and sound of this album was going to be. With so many pushbacks and last minute additions, I thought this was another rushed job like Wests and it was going to Ye-ezu- in s, be another underwhelming project. I couldnt have been any more wrong. Despite the less than impressive packaging and presentation of the album, the music itself is superb. The album stalls with Ultralight Beam, a song that truly emphasizes West's desire to make this a gospel album. A lush choir and tremendous production, a common theme with all of West's projects, really carries this song to its peak. It also features a spectacular verse from fellow Chicago MC San Francisco in 201 4 Photo Editor Jalen Jon s says the Chance the Rapper, and he steals the show on this song: For the second track, Father Stretch My Hands, is broken up into two parts. The first, featuring Kid Cudi, has a triumph theme to it where d West exclaims in his voice, I just want to be liberated. From there, we have a transition to a heavily part two, which features new G.O.OD music signee Desiigner where he boasts about having broads in Atlanta and having a white BMW X6 that resembles a panda. Both parts are equally solid and give a strong start to the album. Some more highlights of this album come in the form auto-tune- ed of songs such as album h Feedback which is more reminiscent of Yeezus but sounds j extremely more polished Waves, another triumph sounding theme, is probd the standout song of this j ' album production-wis- e Sistine Chapel of Rome ' ! An Evening of Impressionism ushered a semester-lon- g series of events hosted by DSUs music department. Professors from across several disciplines were invited to speak at the event Feb. 17, and students performed musical numbers that accompanied the professors' mini lectures. Glenn Webb, chair of the music department, said hes loosely referring to the events as a festival of sorts. Hopefully students pick up some ideas and see the beauty of impressionism, Webb said. Although impressionism signifies something a little bit different in each discipline, the movement as a whole is regarded as a symbol of huge change during the turn of the century, said Nancy Ross, an assistant professor of art. alannahLhall A student from Dixie State Univeisity was From left, pianist Brenda Reep and singer Hillary Ferguson perform Feb 17 Glenn Webb, chair of the music department, says he hopes students will see the beauty of impressionism Ross said art movements are always defining themselves, at least partly, as what their relation is to the movements that came before them; however, impressionism broke tradition in a completely different way. Its easy to look at impressionist painting now and think, That looks nice, but it was actually very challenging for the people who first saw it, Ross said. It challenged a lot of ideas about what art should be. Impressionist art is known for its intense, almost academic, focus on light and color. While popular art at the time depicted valiant war heroes and battles, impressionistic artists like Claude Monet, Camille Pissaro and Mary Cassatt were more focused on contemporary subjects, Ross said.
