Show 3 OCTOBER WEDNESDAY. 28. 2ms DIXIESUNNEWS.COM - 5 Political correctness OIL taking over campus HUSKINS RyanHuskinsDSU BY RYAN Religion, sex and racism are just a few things this new generation of politically correct students are trying to avoid discussing. South Park recently aired an episode about college students trying to be politically correct to the point of ridiculousness. While this episode may have been a funny jab at ff t for le ati i at Id college students, it brings up an important problem: The l, amount of politically correct college students is over-pridefu- growing, Students at the University of California, Berkeley, recently attempted to stop Bill Maher from speaking at their school. This came after Maher took a jab at religious groups on his late night show. Richard Dawkins, a well-know- biolo- n discussed the incident on Mahers show and said, If gist, mi n get exposed to ideas believe in, what kind of you only you would that be? correctness has gone past just trying to be kind and has transformed into a monster university Political : bi d '. i iii 1 i everyone at all times . College campuses are by far the leading offenders of this new trend. Even Barack Obama called students who ban speakers because of their beliefs coddled. Trying to appease every walk of life and every type of person seems like an impossible task, but these students try their hardest by to do it and make sure every one around them is overly cautious about what they say when it comes to i sensitive topics like religion, race and sex. Even at our own Dixie State University we have had instances of political correctness shutting down others. The Dixie Sun News used to print a column where the author would talk about a of variety However, was not topics involving sex many students felt it COSTUMES continued from page 4 People like my culture enough to dress up as part f it for Halloween. Im nt saying its be wrong to offended, but perhaps a different perspective could change being offended into being flattered. However, there is a huge difference between dressing up as a Native American vs. dressing up as a Native American with a knife through his or her appropriate for college-age- d students to read, and this led to the column being shut down over fear of offending more people. I am in no way promoting blatant racism or being hateful to others, but why is it that having a differing opinion about something is not being politically correct? In the recent South Park episode, the most accurate representation to tire real world they had was Caitlyn Jenner. Even those who do not disagree with her being a female but do not find her a hero cannot speak their mind without being called out by politically correct students. Speaking your mind about her makes you in their eyes. This is Insane to me, but there are many politically correct students who will shame you if you have a differing opinion from them. Many comedians have stopped performing at campuses because of fear of the students getting offended and disapproving of what they say. This needs to stop because more often than not comedy is the best way to have a true dialogue about problems we face every day. It is insane that just because a small group of people are afraid other people will be offended that entire campuses are losing the right to have open discussions about relevant topics. Comedian Jerry Seinfreld told USA Today he thinks college students do not understand what political correctness truly trans-phob- ic real-wor- ld is. The younger generation just want to use these words, Seinfeld said. Thats racist, thats sexist, thats prejudice. They dont even know what theyre talking about. One thing is for sure: Political correctness has taken over our generation, and I hope it is another phase we all can get through unscathed. We need to allow people to say what is on their mind without fear of offending people because how can we talk about issues if you will be shamed for it? real-wor- ld more sensitive generation, but if we lose our sense of humor or get offended by everything, Halloween, along with everything else fun, will be ruined. I think d keeping a sense of humor will desensitize this problem. Dressing up as a missionary is different than dressing up as a missionary with demonic makeup, Hornly said. It all comes down to consideration to other cultures. If you think they might get offended, probably dont light-hearte- head. do it. According to an article 0l! woub.org, An Arab bomber costume feeds a There will always be controversy over Halloween. If you are dying to dress up as a Persian princess or Native American, keep it in good taste. If someone gets mad at you, express to them your love for the culture. If that doesnt work, unfriend them on Facebook. Particularly ugly stereotype and could actually get you arrested. J Your life will get mensely better when you stop wearing socks and sandals. Im talking about those brown, rubber Jesus sandals, Air Jordan slippers, ' Birkenstocks, and basically any derivation of sandals that only have straps across the top of your feet. Theyre making your life harder. And, for some reason, many people have decided its okay to pair these with socks, which just adds to the problem. Nothing about this wardrobe decision is a good idea. First of all, Im not just saying this because I think san wearing slipper-typ- e im- flip-flop- s, dals with or without socks looks dorky. I definitely think that, but I truly believe my life is better and more fulfilling because I wear normal shoes like an adult who isnt at the beach or lounging around the house in a robe. As I type these words, Im wearing some sandals I recently bought to investigate this phenomenon. Im also wearing socks. I dont think I am going to be able to keep this up very long. Just walking around in these stupid sandals takes extra effort. Normally when I walk, I dont have to think about how I walk to keep my shoes from slipping off, but with these, theres some amount of attentiveness needed just to keep them on my feet. Any amount of energy I spend readjusting my gait because my shoes are constantly in danger of falling off is energy Ive wasted. Do you like liv ing a life of never-endin- g struggle? What if I was walking around town and almost stepped on a rattlesnake and had to quickly jump back to avoid its venomous strike? Or what if I had to run into a burning house to save a child and there was broken glass on the floor? Or what if I had to do karate in a street fight or be in a dance off? What if I just had to walk backward? I would feel like such a dummy if in any of those situations I happened to be wearing shoes that werent secure on my feet. Have fun trying to get your sandals back from right next to a rattlesnake after jumping backward out of them. I guess you could argue those situations dont come up all that often, but I swear Ive done all but one of those things this week. (I never walk backward.) But if they did come up, youre seriously full day and will continue to unprepared. So functionality in everyday life is pretty much With real shoes, this is never a problem. And my socks are so vulnerable now. Socks are meant to be protected, by shoes. Now my socks are way more likely to ' get dirty, wet or ruined. I hate wearing dirty, wet or ruined socks. Do you all think socks grow on trees or something, like I can juct go get brand new socks whenever I feel like it? Ive got bills to pay. Fortunately, I wear shoes that protect my socks from danger, so I can spend my would-b- e sock money on things that make life better like candy or a Spotify account. Im giving up and putting real shoes on. It hasnt even been a full non-existe- day. I guess I care too much about my socks and living a life with meaning.
