LeamiDinig Left bid farewell Taylor Grin offers parting words stricken with an expensneJ illness or rough fina: ncial luck. News Editor - yTTj?- Why wouldnt you want to pick someone off their feet again? Its not for lack of resources that some of us would deny others treatment We live in a world where we spend trillions on war, haggle over billions to educate, feed and restore the health of our own people. We must have a pr- i Qy Me, Leaning Left. s Ive j 1 been writing this column for a year now and publishing opinion pieces for two. Along the way. Ive tried to write things I think are informative, helpful or wise. Sometimes Ive succeeded, others Ive fallen short. For those of you still reading, Im glad you came along for the journey. I certainly feel Im better for it. Leaning Left has always been more than just an opinion column for me; its also been my way of spreading the few things I feel like Ive learned with you, so you might avoid the mistakes Ive made in the past or experience a new perspective. In this regard, I regret not having more positive columns in contrast with the many negative ones Ive had. That said, Id like to leave you with what Ive learned from Leaning Left what I feel is the core of its message. Think Critically. Part of why Leaning Left has tended toward a negative tone is because criticism tends to first break down, then repair. Critical thought is the core of your college education. In the vast majority of your majors, youll be taught most of all how to have a critical eye. Music majors will get an ear for song. Science majors will find truth from false correlation. Business majors will learn a good investment from a bad one. As you enter the real world, youll be beset on all sides by those who will try to profit from your gullibility and ani ( of advice for final column r artful BY TAYLOR GRIN This will be the last ofound change in our attitude toward human mal instincts. Knowing how to discern truth from fiction and having the restraint to ponder decisions will put you that much more ahead. Thinking critically will help you in every stage of decision making and will spare you the consequences of poorly decisions. thought-ou- t If you have the chance at all, take at least one philosophy class on logic or rhetoric or critical thinking. If your core classes are like lifting weights, then understanding how to think critically is like stretching. When you are flexible, you wont risk injuring yourself from misplaced motion or overexertion. This also means youll develop a deeper of yourself; my second piece of advice. Know yourself. You cannot know what you want or need, where you want to go, or what you should do until you are in tune with yourself. As Ive written in the past, college is probably the last chance youll have to experiment with your interests. Take that art class. Play a sport, or the debate team, or the newspaper or student government. Take a drama class even if youre in the nursing program. A wise man told me in raising his son he had encouraged him to try many sports. The son was terrible at many of them, until finally at 1 6 he found one he loved. When the son asked my friend why hed been pushed through so many other sports the friend replied, You dont know what youre not good at. Media would have you believe you can do anything if you try. They are wrong. There will be talents and skills you wont be good at. Youll hate some foods. Some partners will be terrible for you in a relationship. You owe it to yourself to learn what doesnt work for you, so you can truly know what does. Make a concerted effort to know who you are. The only way to do this is to stretch your comfort zone, challenge your assumptions and take some calculated risks. The benefits will be more fulfilling hobbies, partners, fields of study and jobs. Youll know what you really believe and have the conviction to stand for those beliefs. Respect others. Ive been accused of being a bleeding heart liberal. I am. because Im a socialist, or want control over peoples lives, or feel like others taxes should pay my way. I believe every human being deserves a basic level of decency. I grew up informed by many philosophies amounting to this. The Greeks have a concept of hospitality, inviting in any stranger who seeks help. Christianity teaches the parable of the good Samaritan. More Its not modem thought like abolition and suffrage encourage political equality among all. The reason I am liberal is because I reject the hard-lin- e conservative notion that people shouldnt have a safety net. Ive fallen down often enough to know that I can be more productive if I can get up quickly, rather than on my own. I know that no one is in complete control of his or her circumstances. You can work hard and make wise decisions and still be dignity. To be blunt: Readers, many of you have been raised Mormon g and many of you hold the conservative stance on 5 social justice. Remember your lessons. Love your neighbor. Jesus healed the sick, even the prostitutes and destitute. For environmental safety, remember your stewardship over the earth, and leave camp cleaner than you found it. These are the beliefs youve been raised with; dont forget them. And thats it. Its you came wont be writing along. StaffWnter ' i. Be careful what you say to or about some- one ' you might not know the repercussions of what just slipped out of your mouth. There are a lot of different ways to insult someone, but discriminating remarks are probably the worst offenders. Sure, there are people out there who do this on purpose, and they ultimately will be the ones who have to deal with their conscience. But sometimes the worst people are the ones who arent aware of their comments. I recently started a new with are really nice, but there is one girl who always seems to say the wrong thing at the wrong time. She makes little comments about others, pointing out things about them that could definitely fall into the discrimination category. After hearing stories of her commenting to another coworker that she had never worked with a black man before, assuming that our boss n was because of his skin tone (hes actually Indian), and overhearing her ask an Armenian what her country was (even though she has lived in America for many yearsj, I started to wonder what the deal was. African-America- er Unfortunately Ive because Im a woman doesnt mean plus-siz- e I dont work out I or cant. dont typically get offended by ignorant remarks like that, but since Im new in the office, it was hard not to get my feelings hurt. Anyone in a completely new environment would want to get to know the other people at a new job and make new friends. Her comments put me on the spot in front of other and were em- barrassing. The main frustration Im feeling is shes actually a very nice woman. I think she is just unaware that her comments are actually offensive. Whenever there is a situation like this, there most likely is not malicious intent involved. Thats why I think its so important to tell the people how you feel about the things they say. Helping someone see the mistake is worth the momentary uncomfortable feelings. Even if it only helps one other person not having to go through what you did. I am a strong believer that people should never assume something about someone based on any factors that make up who they are. It might not seem like a big deal, but what you say defines who you are. If you make comments that sound racist, you could get categorized as that. Educate yourself and think before you speak. And if you are the one experiencing the discrimination, be brave 'enough to stick up for yourself to the offender or someone else who might be able to help.
