I wish I had romantic dates like on The Bachelor. I wish I could dance like the little girls on Dance Moms. But life just isnt like what it is on television. Some might say we watch television to fulfill needs we dont have in our real lives. Friendships, like on Friends and How I Met Your Mother, are hard to come by. I doubt anyone has friends just like the ones on these sitcoms. And why not? Because we are too busy watching television to actually go out and make these friends. We are so busy living vicariously through the TV that we dont have the time to actually go out and make our own friends, and if we do, we might not even meet the people we should be friends with because they are sitting at home watching television, too. As students, we go to school, work, and do homework and only occasionally get taken off the leash we put ourselves on to do something fun. Normally this something fun consists of doing an activity with the friends we already have. We dont really have a coffee shop like they do on Friends, and we definitely dont have a bar like the one where Marshall, Ted and the gang hang out on How I Met Your Mother. In St. George we just dont have enough of the resources to have these types of friendships. We dont have the resources to go on elaborate dates, either. We have restaurants and movies, and not much of anything else. The cast of The Bachelor flies to new romantic destinations every week and has the funds to go on elaborate dates. But what is so bad about our real lives that we want the lives of those on television? Nothing. We might fantasize about the lives of fake characters, but in all actuality, life is pretty college life great. At least we arent scripted to say whatever the writers want us to say and act how the directors want us to act. At least we arent yelled at that we are BY ROBBY BRIGGS Staff Writer playing ourselves wrong and told where to go on dates and when to take a sip of coffee. We arent gelled at for not dancing well enough and told that we are replaceable or fired in front of millions of viewers. Most celebrities on television are messed up. They arent allowed to live normal lives. They are always in view of many people and have to act, dress and be someone they might not actually want to be. They are told who to be, and they cant make mistakes like we can. So here is your call to action: Next time you are watching TV, remember who you are instead of fantasizing about other people in the show and wishing you were them. The television is just a fantasy, and most of the scenes and plots on TV arent going to happen in our real lives. Besides, we look better being ourselves than pretending to be someone we see on television any day. want to be Sarah Palin, pranksters often reach out to me in other ways, too. Ive experienced a life full of things such as teriyaki pancakes, spill-on-mys- cups, and pranks. find my peace with all the nonsense when igh lobe DIXIE SUN the T1 lob: Richard Briggs, Editor-in-Chi- ora ihoi lav start plotting my counter prank. Pranks, if tactfully executed, can be a way people can show others they are important. However, at times some people on the receiving end of a prank, pran-keeget upset because a particular prank isnt as funny as the prankster thought it would be. It is therefore in the best interest of all parties, pranksters' and prankees, to exercise consideration. Pranksters keep the world spinning; they are essential to maintaining society on an g plane. In order to effectively prank, a prankster should be creative and concise; he or she should avoid cliches and keep it light. Sometimes jerks, will commit maliciously untactful acts of vandalism and call it a prank. Judge wisely as one should not prank in such a way that would cause actual harm. Harm to family members, or any human for that matter, can be considered assault. Also, animals should be left in s, blame some people after some of the pranks Ive seen pulled on them.
