If I had a nickel for every time I went out with a baited line in hopes of reeling in some sort of controversial debate, then Id have, well, several dollars, I guess. I actually wish I had a nickel for every time someone said, If I had a nickel. But Im not here to get completely off topic in my second paragraph, so allow me to get back to the point. Yes, sometimes its fun to go setting traps in hopes of snapping in some unsuspecting victim who will most surely get owned. But when is enough too much? All you master debaters out there just need to calm the fetch down. This type of attitude can be demonstrated on both ends of the fight with me scale. On one end, we have people wholl read cereal boxes during their morning nosh and then battle everyone during the day as to how much riboflavin is actually in a bowl of Cheerios. And then there gre lethal examples, like Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman. Zimmerman was out looking for a fight, and his need for opposition ended in a death. I see this on campus almost every day I mean the cereal example, thank gosh. Hey, Utah. Im upping that previous review to five out of five new words. How do you like them potatoes? Id wager you like them grated up and cooked funeral style. Sometimes I hear students engaging each other in debates so superfluous that they make The Real Housewives of Orange County look like the presidential elections. I cant count the number of times Ive witnessed one of my fellow students troll for . an argument because he or she is (I can only assume) bored. In what can only be a snub of campus security, some DSC students come armed with weapons every day. Those weapons are usually abstract novels and contextually inaccurate quotations. Are they sharing their knowledge because the facts they found are awesome and shouldnt be kept to just one person? Or are they out to make themselves look smarter than those around them? Either way, it appears these people are out looking for a fight. You already know whom Im talking about. Think about sitting in class and trying to leam when all of a sudden a hand pops up. You look to see whose five digits just broke the sound barrier in an attempt to dispute whatever the professor may be teaching. You see its the same student whos always on the defense. Then, in a glorious effort to draw the whole class into at least 20 minutes of time none of them will ever get back again, said student begins to argue with instructors and students alike even if the argument has nothing to do with the subject matter. Im always in awe over what drives these types of people. Is a lack of constant debate a source of serious turmoil in their lives? Do they need to prove they are right to all the people all the time, even if they only win by whining and arguing so much that their opposition simply gives up? Or do they think theyre actually doing everyone else a service by not shutting the heck up? Im going to go ahead and double my review to 10 new words. I fear the last example is the worst. When people believe it is they, and they only, who can bring knowledge to the masses, and then what you get are egotistical maniacs who wouldnt admit defeat even if it meant eternally blocking them from Wikipedia. They cant be argued with because theyll never see Lil ienc lppr anyones side but their tual on a own. youre an Of course getting class content sucked out of the you second and remind you self that youre a college student and not a profes sional scientist in the fit room by the vacuum that is the constant debater isnt fatal even though sometimes it makes me feel as though Im being tortured to death. But the parallel is still there. So Ive decided to stop looking for a fight. Sure, I can leam something new on the Internet that I assume is as important to the rest of the world as it is to me. But I have enough willpower to hold myself back and not burst into the classroom screaming, Schrodingers cat is nothing but a fallacy! in hopes someone will grab that stick and tug. Next time you come to class armed with an argument, could you do us all a favor and figure out if its relevant? If you feel the need to debate the instructor or your fellow student, will you take a little time and decide if its important to anyone other than yourself? Transhumanists believe technology will continue its onward march of development until it becomes difficult to imagine what the future could look like. Its not an absurd view. Could anyone have predicted the way the Internet has radically changed our world? Or that smartphones the size of credit cards would enable telecommunication and data retrieval around the globe? Technology is like fire neither good nor bad simply a tool subject to the morals of its bearer. Accordingly, as technol- ogy develops we must be increasingly aware of the implications of that technology, so we can use it responsibly.
