Show i The great thing about the Democratic process is that people can vote for whomever they please, and we encourage all of the students at Dixie State College to make themselves informed voters. The upcoming student elections will determine to a large extent the way student representation grows, shrinks or stagnates during the 20 1 1 20 2 school year. It is critical for the students of DSC to carefully consider their options and make their choice. People cast their votes for a variety of reasons. Intelligence, looks, public speaking ability and even a slick marketing campaign can all help someone win political office. At the Dixie Sun we believe the criteria for casting a vote should be trust. Simply put: Do you trust -- 1 time conflicts between sporting events and other school activities in order to maximize attendance all around. We need a pair that will work well with administrators and legislators in a businefashion to serve ss-like DSC students effectively and efficiently. We need to elect a team who promises to pursue the important things. The things your future leaders choose to spend their time on will impact you and everyone else at DSC, so make sure your president and vice president are dedicated to more than just fluff and fun. We need to elect someone who is committed to doing the right thing in office. The right thing can sometimes be a tricky thing to define. In this context we mean the action that will best serve nothing wrong with that. As mentioned before, smoking can actually help job performance. After calming down and escaping from a stressful work environment, my fellow employees are ready to return to work and be productive. If you set this precedent by refusing to hire someone with a legal addiction or habit, where will you draw the line? So maybe think twice before you light up before that big interview-- it could cost you the job, even though it shouldnt. I see not see how testmg for nicotine can be justified. Companies should not be allowed to control every aspect of their employee's lives. What the employee does with his or her life should be his or her owil business. As long as SMOKERS continued from page ers need to eliminate the said candidate with the job? And we are talking about a very important job. The student leaders we elect represent us to administrators. They sit in on committees that decide how our fees are spent. They appoint students to Club Council, Student Council and the Student Senate. They plan and execute activities and events. They are responsible for drafting their budget, getting it approved and making sure their budget is spent wisely and fairly. They work with state legislators and other important people who can make or break Dixie's future. Managing student fees, working toward university status, and improving student representation in meaningful ways are some of the important challenges the duo we elect will have to face. We also believe student lead 1 1 the picture. If a less qualified but nonsmoking applicant gets a job over more qualified applicant who smokes, I feel that is wrong and unjustified. If someone wants to go outside the employee completes his or her job adequately it should not matter whether he or she smokes. Some of tire best coworkers I know are smokers. They work hard and and smoke on break, there should be no problem. I am not trying to justify smoking. I think smoking is a terrible habit that ruins many lives, but until it is deemed illegal in a court of law I can perform at a high level, 'and then when it comes time to leave or go on break they want to relax with a cigarette. A good leader needs to have the desire and instinct to discover what the best course of action is, and then he or she must have the conviction to do it even if it isnt the most convenient option. You can have the fastest, shiniest and most luxurious car on the road, but it doesnt mean a thing unless it is reliable. Some people, take Michael Vick for example, explode with flashes of greatness and inspire praise, but many of them cannot be counted on to do well every time. Things can be a roller coaster of great, then really great, and then bad, awful and worse. The best gauge of reliability is someones record. A power on a national scale cannot go unchecked for an extended period of time. Its obvious, from an outside perspective, how corrupt it can become. As Lord Acton said in his famous letter to his bishop, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men." Giving a government free reign on its decisions is like giving it absolute power. Of course its going to become corrupt. Even if the corruption doesnt spread in its first generation or so, it will become corrupt. You can quote me on that. This is why rebellion is such a useful tool. It helps keep the power in question. It keeps people thinking. It keeps people from getting compliant. And best of all, its available to everyone. Rebellion, or rocking the boat, is something we all have access to. Rebellion is often the only way to make changes to the current policies. For example, womens suffrage would likely not exist today had it not been g for and protest- - j V L f f ' boat-rockin- EF for frepidation. How do the people who have worked with them in their other endeavors rate their performance? We are no longer high school students who can feel OK with voting for whomever is popular or pretty; we need to be more mature than this. Back then an awful dance was the worst that could happen if the wrong person won, but now the stakes are much higher. Dixie State College is in a unique stage of its growth. Its rapid swelling in size has brought many complex and critical challenges to Dixie State. Some of these challenges are exciting, and some of them are cause Does rebellion in the U.S. need to take place on the CHAGRIN continued from page 1 1 new revolution.
