Show V'- - WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, DIXIE SUN 12- eview ericamism amti-- A BY MATT JACOBSON A & E editor I cant be-- ;. lieve it. I simply cannot believe 1 Cwhat our , j ' country has ' f come to. Let me make it perfectly clear before I begin my review this week: I am against the A J burning of anyones religious reading material, be it Quran, Bible or Vogue. I think its absolutely disgusting that anyone would want to desecrate the words written in the tome of someone elses religion. Now that weve got that out of the way, lets move on to this Florida pastor, the Rev. Terry Jones, and his recent endeavor to publicly bum the Quran on Sept. 11. If you dont already know, he has opted out of this particular activity, and rightly so. But thats not the subject of this particular Skewed Review. Im zooming in on our government. Specifically Prince Obama-liciousnes- s. stated Jones should not bum the Quran because it might put our troops in Afghanistan in danger. Now this is critical thinking, and Jones did the No-ba- right thing by backing down. But my question for Wary Barry is, where are you during the flag burnings rallies and all over this great nation and all over the world for that matter? How come we didnt hear you speaking out when Iran put on that demonstration a anti-Americ- an COLLEGE continued from page 1 1 their perspective on a topic. College is about applying your knowledge and getting d experience in your first-han- field. It amazes me how many students come to college simply to go to class and then go home and study or whatnot. The college experience is about involvement. There are hundreds of events associated with college that happen all year round and cater to every interest. There are dances, clubs, sporting events, barbecues, carnivals, you name it. These events are usually free or only cost a small fee, and they are a great way to get out, have fun, and meet new people. 2Qiq: Net neutrality picks up pace by mct its Google characterizes anagreement with Verizon, nounced earlier this month, as a pragmatic compromise in the battle over net neutrality, which government regulators have struggled for years to address. n Critics say it's a cave to the telecommunications industry. Either way, the proposed legislative framework is not neutral for consumers. Julius Genachowski, Federal Communications Commission chairman, has offered a reasonable "Third Way" proposal that would regulate broadband much like phone service, but in a limited way that's better suited to modem technology. We urge him to continue pursuing a version of that strategy, even amid intense opposition. the conNet neutrality the Inall traffic on that cept treated be should ternet equally by service providers, regardless of its content must apply to all of the web. But the framework endorsed by Google, previously the most prominent corporate supporter of net neutrality, would for now exempt wirea blow to less providers consumers and the small businesses that rely on a free and open Internet to compete. n If adopted, the framework would create two sets of mles for -accessing the Internet, a convoluted arrangement for servconsumers. Wired-lin- e ice providers would have to abide by the principles of net neutrality while the growing wireless industry could speed, slow or block content based on its own desires or business arrangements. Verizon Wireless, for example, could in theory speed access to its business partner Google's search engine, and slow access to Bing, owned by Microsoft. Bing could even be blocked. This would be unfair, not to mention confusing. An iPhone user, for instance, might see different mles of the road based on whether he or she was connecting to the Internet from her home network or from a park using AT&Ts. That makes no sense. Google and Verizon argue that wireless spectmm constraints mean the mles should be different. No one, though, suggests wireless providers be barred from using reasonable network Google-Verizo- say, slowing access to individual bandwidth hogs when bandwidth is con- strained. They just shouldn't be able to block, slow or speecLaccess to certain site n which the would allow. proposal The framework has other worrisome pieces. It would allow the creation of Intemtl "fast lanes," in which companies pay to access a new, quicker network, an idea with serious potential conse quences for the existing lie Internet. It also allows telecom companies, in sonic cases, to police themselves and we know how well that's worked in other areas Net neutrality proponents expected better results fron the Obama administration Politics, intense lobbying,! court ruling that the FCCdi not have the authority to regulate broadband and no couple of years back? You know the one Im talking about. They had a marching band shaped like a sword cut through another marching band shaped like an American flag (no, really, that actually happened). Quick review for Iran: You have to fight four out of five wars with just that marching band and its instruments. See how many people you can kill with your dancing band geeks and their ability to stand in the shape of something. e OK, back to Obama. So our president took time out of his busy vacationing schedule to call a Florida pastor and tell him and his 50 parishioners to not burn that darn Quran. I don't think he did this to protect the lives of our brave men and women who are fighting the war on terror. I think it was for PR purposes. He wants to show the world that we play nice. It seems to me that Barry, Barry Quite Contrary is so concerned with how the world perceives us, that hes slowly but surely becoming Yes, stopping the Quran burning may have saved a lot of trouble overseas. But it also makes our press(hungry)ident look like hes bowing to the will of every other person in the world except those here in the country he rules, er, I mean, presides over. Heres my review for our fearful leader: Mr. Barack Insane Obama has to give every speech from here on out without the aid of his ever faithful teleprompter. Oblahma gets this review not for stopping the Quran burning, but for sticking up for every country but ours. When someone inside the borders of the U.S.A. bums a flag or spews rhetoric, I want to see B to the o on my TV defools. those nouncing The next time Barry-bo- y and his wife Michelle Antoinette fly in their modest Air Force One jet to meet some foreign prince, king or tribe leader, I want to see him shake their hands, not bow to them! I want him to stop apologizing for America. For we are the country that has done the most for the world! Show me a country as generous as we when it comes to charity. Not only do we freely give as a country, but we also allow others to take from us while we sit back and twiddle our thumbs. When it comes to both here in the states as well as abroad, I want to see the same passion from Barocky Balboa Obama that he showed when he spoke out about the Quran burning in Florida. I want to see the same passion that he had for the Harvard professor who was wrongfully arrested by the Cambridge cops. You know, the incident that resulted in the famous beer summit. The next time Barack steps up to his teleprompter, I would like to hear him say: Let me be clear. America is great, and the next person to defile her will have to deal with Michelle. Now thats the kind of State of the Union Id be willing to stay awake for. Now if you happen to be an "older" student and are just looking to get a degree, then you get a pass. But if you are fresh out of high school then there is no excuse! What is there to lose? Dont get me wrong, the primary purpose of college is learning and education, but it is by no means the only purpose. Instead of studying an extra hour for an exam, try leaving the dorm room and experiencing the many benefits college has to offer outside of the classroom. So next time you feel a bit apprehensive about spending that paycheck on tuition, remember that if you intend to embrace the college experience and become involved with events and people, it will be worth every penny. Dear Kate: on a laundry schedule Barock-the-vot- n! an O-z- BY KATE SEMMENS Lifestyles editor Dear Kate, I am very busy. Not only am I a full-tim- e student, but I work full J time as well. in live I an apartment complex where there are only four washing machines for the people who live in the apartments to use. (T didn't have any more time to wait and three loads to do.) Was it reasonable of me to move someone else's clothes? From, On a Schedule Dear On a Schedule, Isnt it crazy how jam packed our lives are today? I can completely identify with you because I am always on a schedule as well. Most days I am grateful for the schedule. However, there are those days when it is all I can do not to get in my car and drive to the California coast and never look back. I can see how it would be completely frustrating to set a specific time to get vour laun-- dry done and be unable to do it because someone else has left his or her stuff in the washer. I think it was completely reasonable for you to move someone elses clothes. After waiting a half hour, which was probably 25 minutes longer than I ' would have waited, I see noth- ing wrong with taking some action and getting the job done yourself. I am not sine if your laundry facility is free or if you have to use quarters to do your laundry. If it does take money to accomplish the task, I would even deem you a saint for using your hal'd earned quarter's to dry someone elses clothes. Perhaps that is the mystery persons scheme to get his or her laundry done for free. He or she may be thinking that by leaving clothes in the washer long enough someone is going to get fed up and stick tire clothes in the dryer for him or her. If this happens again, rather than putting the clothes into tire ATI iu dry ers where they would take 4 up space, you should place or items on top of the dryer on a folding table where they car, easily be seen by tire person who left them in tire washer. This way you arent being the catalyst to this persons plant mooch a free drying session. It may also help them realiz tire world doesnt revolve around them, and there are other inhabitants of tire planet who need to get some laundn done as well. Thank you for writing in t0 Bus me with your dilemma. I th Riel this is a topic many of tire stu dents at Dixie State College could benefit from.
