Show NEWS 2 -- WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER? DIXIE SUN yEC Students encouraged to report harassment The administration at Dixie State College does not condone harassment of any form, and even though complaints of harassment are rare, the administrators want students to be aware of the help available. According to DSCs Sexual HarassmentDiscrimi-natio- n an Policy immediate investigation must be conducted when harassment of any kind is reported or observed; therefore, students are encouraged to report such incidents to Student Services if they feel like another student or faculty member is harassing them. Dean of Students. Del Beatty said: If there is a perpetrator or someone who is harassing someone, then we need to know about it because we want to take action. Legally we do not allow or tolerate harassment in any form. Beatty said if any student has an ongoing harassment issue on campus, then he or she can talk to any member of the faculty or someone he or she is comfortable talking to, no matter who that person may be. That andor disciplined accordingly. Will Craver, assistant director of human resources, said to his knowledge no staff or faculty member has been dismissed for harassment in the five years that he has been at DSC. Beatty said there has been one student dismissed and one student suspended for harassment since October 2008. Beatty assured that every immediate action will be taken on the students behalf to get the harassment issue resolved so there is no continuing emotional drag that could potentially affect he or she college experience. Beatty and Will Craver, assistant director of human resources, agree that harassment at DSC is not a huge issue, and a student who is being harassed or thinks he or she is being harassed should tell at least one person, no matter who that person may be. Craver said the reason why harassment does not seem to be a problem at DSC is because students are not reporting it out of fear or because they are handling it on their own. It is OK to report harassment, Craver said. We may have a pornography problem, Gubler said. I just dont know about it Gubler, like Koeven and Goble, said the bigger issue is not pornography, but rather the illegal downloading of music, movies and software on campus. In the case of music or movies being downloaded, the companies usually contact us, Gubler said. Gubler said the issue of illegal downloading is a far bigger problem than if pom is or is not being looked at on campus. Gubler said there was only one instance when a student was offended by material that the students roommate was accessing from his dorm. The situation was handled without involving law enforcement and Gubler said it hasnt happened since. As far as pornography, there isnt a single case, Gubler said.
