Publishing companies are under increasing demand to offer media or alternative tools to supplement standard textbooks, and Dixie State College students may have noticed the addition of online sites printed at the bottom of some textbook pages. Brendon Cady, publishers representative for Bedford, Freeman & Worth, said the companion sites were developed by faculty who know the common pitfalls that students struggle with. He said the goal of the sites is for students to have a positive experience, and for resources to be ready and available. Just a click away, these sites offer study resources like flash cards, multiple choice practice tests, true and false tests, essay questions, and even short videos if you are a visual learner. Were just little old Dixie State, she said Were not hurting anybody. Jeffrey Young, a freshman undecided major from St. George, said he liked the mascot overall but didnt think it was the best choice. Td rather stick with the Rebels because the Red Storm sounds lame, Young said. We've been the Rebels forever. Yet even with some sour feelings about the retired icon. , see RED STORM page 2 sites can even build bibliographies for you. College students need as much help as they can get, and these sites may just be a light at the end of the tunnel when it comes down to critical tests or finals. English adjunct instructor Amanda Scott suggested the supplement guides to a student who was struggling with her grammar and wasnt helped by worksheets. , The online supplements are awesome because a lot of students get information, or their whole degree for that matter, on the Internet, Scott said. Its a great visual tool to accompany textbook reading. However, I think that the text itself is still the best study tool. When Scott started teaching and familiarizing herself with The St. Martins Guide to Writing textbook she found background information on the online resources through the brief description on the back of the book. Mitchell said instructors had to end several students' tests to allow those who where scheduled their opportunity to use a testing computer. However, the test timer mistakenly led the students to believe they had more time than they really did. Mitchell said students were upset with the timing issue, and the instructors were frustrated because they didn't realize the implications of the update until the last day of the test, and at that point they had no way to fix the problem. Rogers said the problem will be resolved before the next section of test outs takes place. Other students have complained about the open struc- ture of the class. Students enrolled in CIS 1200 do not attend lecture classes; instead they are required to learn the material on their own. Travis Dixon, a sophomore undecided major from Farmington, said: I think it is an inefficient use of my time. There should be a teacher rather than learning to use a computer from a computer. Rogers said she has a lot of students tell her they wish a lecture class was an option. We have actually tried that in the past and not had any show up, she said. We dont object to holding a lecture class, but we dont have students register for it. In addition to these specific complaints, DSC students most commonly describe the course as tedious, overwhelming, unfair or a waste of time. Inst1 4 0 Mitchell said she thinks most students vent about CIS to other students, rather than talking to instructors. Most of the students get frustrated and instead of coming to talk to us they get frustrated, and then they get mad, she said. And if they would have come in and talked to us in the first place they would realize there wasnt any reason to get mad or upset. Mitchell said most frustrated students she sees are satisfied after receiving course help or clarification -- from an instructor. Jason Brogly, a freshman undecided major from St. George, said he heard a lot of negative things about the class before he took it. A whole bunch of people told me the class was really tedious and difficult, he said. Rogers said very few students complain to the CIS instructors, but the biggest complaint they hear is that the class is a waste of time. But when I point out the fact that they arent attending a lecture class and how much time they are really spending in the class, then they generally admit that they are not spending qny more time than they do in their lecture classes, Rogers said. z 4 6 9 Dixie State College CareerFinancial Aid Bldg. 225 S 700 E St. George, UT 84770 11 dixiesundixie.edu TV ((C)) DUk Co(er for Media Phone: (435) Fax: (435) Innovation 652-781- 8 656-401- 9 |
