Adam Metcalf, a junior communication major from St. George, has worked for local TV station KCSG a little over a year. From his work outside of school he thought communication was an interesting field, so he picked it as his major and continued down the path toward a degree. Metcalf said he puts about six to eight hours of his own time into the broadcast outside of his class as the line producer editing stories and putting them online. Disclosure is different from other shows because it broadcasts straight to the Internet so the show can be accessed by anyone, anytime, Metcalf said. This mobility allows the show to go on anywhere an Internet connection is available. We (at Disclosure) step outside of the box from what most colleges are doing, Metcalf said. We are a little different, not like a regular news station. Instead we are creative with what we are doing by having our news broadcast available online. The students produce a show online every week. Caldwell said the f Regents resig-natio- n Board never really reason resign, but him if he did not res'gn, he would be fired. Ro said he believes he was asked to resign for several Save him a solid "by he was to afferent reasons. I had some major agreements with the 0Vermy dis- board entire tenure as President, he said. I think Sorhehow the idea got into their heads that their job is to keep institutions and their presidents in a box. I cant tell you how many times I heard the phrase, Stay in your box, president. Dixie needs to stay in its box. Thomas McNeilis, faculty senate president and associate professor of biological sciences, said as far he knows the faculty still has no background on why Caldwell resigned so sudare denly, but he said many it. still disappointed about "It is kind of water under the bridge now because its been nine or 10 months, but we're all disappointed about his resignation because we thought things (ldixiesunlinJs Visit us online for breaking news, photo galleries, commentary, interactive features, and more were going down the right path, especially the association and affiliation with the University of Utah, and now that has sort of taken the back burner," McNeilis said. Caldwell said the idea the board had in mind was to keep DSC a community college. He said they were upset that the community went over their heads back in 2000 and voted for a four-yedegree mission for ar DSC. Every time DSC got a new degree approved and I took that degree forward they were furious at me, he said. We had to jump through hoops that no other school had to jump through. I have never seen what we had to do to get a degree done in any other state that I have corresponded with. While Caldwell was president, he said the number of students at DSC increased significantly, but no budget increase was given. He said two years of budget cuts then had to take place because DSC didnt have enough faculty for the number of students. He said he knew the college would be put on probation during accreditation for getting worse in this area, but he could not get help from the Board of Regents in fixing the faculty issue. about enrollment growth numbers, Urquhart said. Im sure that that had something to do with Caldwells sudden resignation. Thats one thing they brought up with me. Caldwell said before he applied for the job as president he knew he was going to have to commit the two mortal sins that presidents have to commit: ask for more money and ask for more degrees. He said neither one was supported by the Regents. I was reluctant to apply for the job as president because I knew I would have to commit those two see CALDWELL page 2 how to reach us inside News. . ,. Sports Arts & Entertainment Opinion Lifestyles . I worked with the Legislature to get more money for the school, and the Regents didnt like that because we got funding without their blessing, Caldwell said. That was another mortal sin. State Sen. Steve Urquhart said while he cant say that he knows the Board of Regents asked Caldwell to resign, he knew they had several concerns. Any and all presidents serve at the will and pleasure of the Regents, and Im not privy to the reasons why they hire and fire, but one thing that had been expressed to me was that they were very concerned . 7 ' 9 Dixie State College CareerFinancial Aid Bldg. 225 S 700 E St. George, UT 84770 dixiesundixie.edu 7)n i n f "'1 V j vrt Li V lih.i.
