Show SaY, AUGUST 27, 2008 ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT DIXIE SUN - 7 flows over when it comes UnderOath under pressure ght down to The Wire BY MORGAN COZIAR Dixie Sun A&E Editor !7. What Season 5 is about, says Simon in the DVD documentary "The Wire: The Last Word," is "how far you can go on a lie." And the lies are flying from all quarters-frodetective Jimmy McNulty (Dominic West), frustrated by his department's lack of resources, who makes up a case about an alleged serial killer in their midst in an effort to obtain more funds for real police work; from the usual duplicity among the members of the various gangs; and, most important, from the city's paper of record, the Baltimore Sun. Simon and his crew made the inner workings of the Sun one of Season 5s major plotlines, with a particular emphasis on an unethical and ambitious reporter's use of manufactured quotes and sources to enhance his stories and the fights between various editors about the value of those stories. The season also cast a critical look at the cutbacks that have affected most major city newspapers and what IX) "The J !.Clark Wire," Johnson, "is iniore." certainly in of know to ,,tion lie speaks about the series that con-i- d its fifth and final earlier this year. 3Ctor- - director was a 1980s jar on NBC's drama made: Life on the " .,t which was based book by former is l,nSon 3 m more-s- Sun police ter David Simon, jon "The Wire," anore Simon also creat-- d set in Baltimore-jo- n ji directed the - first episode in jand the series and also starred the final season jg jus Haynes, city 'e. edi-jft- he Sun. toon's point is that had trended the crime genre some an accurate, donate, depressing powerful portrait of decline of Baltimore iy extension, the ne of the American His remarks are on an audio com-'ar- y for the second of the final sea-- . which has been Md on DVD- - "The ;Wire" ie ode The lie that has meant to the papers' coverage of their communities. Season 5 did not quite match the dramatic punch of Season was probably inevitable, given that it's hard to equal the intensity of feeling provoked by watching children in trouble. "The Wire" in its final season remains television at its peak. Simon and his cast and crew adeptly wrap up the interweaving story lines that had been constructed over five seasons, even bringing back important characters from past seasons, like the imprisoned Avon Barksdale (played memorably by Wood Harris), for meaningful and not the least bit gratuitous cameos. One of the DVD bonus features, "The Wire Odyssey," includes cast and crew members recalling favorite characters and favorites scenes from the series. After watching this, loyal fans of "The Wire" will no doubt be doing the same. (c) 2008, McClarchy-Tribun- e Information Services After releasing Theyre Only Chasing Safety in 2004 it was obvious UnderOath was a metal force to be reckoned with. Although they had just acquired new vocalist Spencer Chamberlain, he was learning how to control n his gift of singing and screaming, and proving he could make it in the metal world. And the band made sure you knew they were working for the big guy upstairs, giving Christian bands a new face. Over the past four years UnderOaths faith and fan base have grown into a built-i- n support system for Chamberlain the Florida sextet. This support system hit its crucial make or break moment in the summer of 2006. Upon the release of 2006 s Define the Great Line, Chamberlains issues with substance abuse came out in the open, and the band suddenly dropped off Warped Tour; a break-u- p seemed eminent. While the band was off the radar for awhile, rumors circulated about whether the band would split. In the middle of all the confusion, drummer The Aaron Gillespies Almost, made its debut. UnderOath fans were on the fence, waiting for news about whether The Almost would take over Gillespies time. But alas, news was received of a new UO album, and The Almost was recog- - i i god-give- , side-projec- t, forges his way through Christian-meta- Complete 'ttason." conclusion of Wire" has brought :end what many ummy eovei ingall aatic iy time series in M 1 1 O c, roller LJIIP WlilHIIII vers, including this view as the finest plot ito televi--- i Over five featuring some en, he' best writing and rg on TV-- the well-"v- n movie journalist Joe job of en says in an inter- mrnoi on the DVD that owing Wire" "deserves s. We have seen the band transform and refine their style as they graduated from Chasing Safety to Define the Great Line and from the looks of the first single off the album, Desperate Times, Desperate Measures, the boys refined into perfection. Lost in the Sound of Separation will be the story of six lives drawing closer together. Through Chamberlains challenging past and Gillespies side project, the group has been able evolve, mature and grow together as a band. On Sept. 2 this unity will shine through in Sound of Separation as these men continue to keep the mosh pit moving while simultaneously showing their love and appreciation for the Lord. |
