BY TYLER NELSON Dixie Sun Staff Writer When it comes to Christmas people get excited about the presents, but the things that get them the most excited tend to be those traditions carried on from generation to generation. Traditions are the backbone of any holiday; thats what a holiday really is. Of course, the most known Christmas traditions involve a big man in a red suit, going from house to house on Christmas Eve, delivering presents to all the children who have been good that past year. Most of the time the most memorable and meaningful Christmas traditions are those that are made by individual families. Such is the case with Nikki Green, a freshman undecided major from Bear Lake, whose family bakes multiple rolls on Christmas Eve and puts them in the shape of a Christmas tree with green frosting on the tree and gold or yellow frosting on the top roll for the star. After opening presents the next morning her family eats the rolls for breakfast. Its a tradition that has been going for a long time; I dont even know when it started first, Green said If we eat them before that then it is bad luck. And we get in trouble. A lot of the traditions for holidays involve food or just hanging out with the family. That seems to be the most important aspect of the holidays: being with the ones you love and doing the things you enjoy most. A tradition that a lot of families have is opening a present on Christmas Eve, and most of the time that present is pajamas. Adelyn Asay, a freshman social work major from West Valley City, said her family gets the pajamas on Christmas Eve, and that night her whole family gets together for their family Christmas party where all the kids act out the nativity scene narrated by her uncle. They also bake cookies to take to neighbors and friends as well as the shelters in town. Last year we made well over 300 cookies to take around, Asay said. Another tradition Asay looks forward to is a gift from her grandfather, who gives $200 to his childrea $100 to his grandchildren, and $50 to his For dinner on Christmas day her family enjoys different courses from different parts of the world that represent where all her cousins served LDS missions. They eat food from places such as Russia, Australia and Costa Rica After they eat all the food they watch A Christmas Story to seal the deal for Christmas. Those types of traditions seemed to be the most typical among students. Camille Day, a sophomore undecided major from Lehi, said her family does the nativity scene also, but in the past the whole family and cousins would act it out In recent years the family has gotten so big they decided to break off into individual families to do the manger scene. When it comes to opening presents for Day, she and her siblings get to sleep in the same room on Christmas Eve and wait for her parents to get them in the morning. For food, Days mother makes Cornish hens, cheesy potatoes, and a lot of candy, including caramel popcorn Then we all go to different houses to see my brothers and sisters and see what they all got, Day said For the most part all the traditions that bring the most Christmas joy involve family. That is what Christmas is all about: getting close to family and spending time with them. |
