The 2005 fall semester has now begun, but before most of us even had the thought of getting off the sofa and signing up for classes, there were a few on the field or on the court preparing themselves for another dynamic season for Dixie State College. The volleyball, football and women s soccer teams are looking forward to giving their fans another great season. It is also our job (well OK, my job) to make sure you gel the updates you need in order to be a true Rebel at every game. Not to pul all the pressure on the women s soccer team, but if the fans don't have a high expectation level for the team, then they should. Is it the coach? Is it the players? Is it the St. George water? That is for you to decide. All I know is that the soccer team has taken third place or better in the NJCAA National Tournament four of the past five seasons, including two national championships. Teams gathered from Wyoming, Utah, Oregon and Idaho to participate. Even though the Rebels finished with a winning record, there is still room for improvement. Freshman setter Whitnee Webster said, Were learning to play together as a team and well continue to work hard in practice. DSC faced competition from Southwest Athletic Conference rivals as they fell to the College of Southern Idaho and Salt Lake Community College. With Jeff Parker in his fourth season as head coach of the team, the goal, as always, is to advance deep into the NCJAA Tournament. The Rebels will compete in the next tournament in Salt Lake City Friday and Saturday. 5-- 3 The Rebel football team prepares for Saturdays game with a scrimage at Hansen Stadium. 1,740 yards and mores, the team is already past, but isnt planning on mediocrity. Before changing to Division II next year, the Rebels plan to conquer the NJCAA Championship. Our goal is to win the championship for the last time, Huddleston said. Go out in a flame. This years team has already opened the season with two wins in California. Thanks to some key returning sophomores and many anxious and devoted freshmen, this team is already making a statement for their competitors. Be sure to support them when they host Paradise Valley Community College from Phoenix on Monday at 10 a m. Despite the talk of the womens volleyball team being a young team, with only four returning sopho proving they have what it takes to be a competitive team in this year's season. According to a press release from Dixie State College, coach Jeff Parker said he believes to have as good a chance as they have ever had. They showed a bit of that in last week's tournament where they came out of it winning five of eight matches. Some of the sophomore returnees include Honorable Mention Tiffany Morrill and also Lindsey Jolley, who Parker said came to life late in their last season. Shifting gears one more time, the football team starts its season Saturday at 7 p.m. One amongst the players is returning running back JT Diedrichs, who rushed for 22 touchdowns last season. Although one may speculate and say how well the team will do this year, coach Greg Croshaw knows it will take more than a few games in order to see the real content of his team. Im thrilled with the kids on this team, Croshaw said. make-believ- e I feel they will work hard... but I guess we wont know how well they will do until the end of the season. This team, preseason ranked second in the league, will open at home against a group of former collegiate players from Ogden. Three great teams, three great coaches, and three national titles are up for grabs. The Rebels first contended against Palomar College, score. winning with a They then battled San Diego Mesa College. However, San Diegos battling efforts went unseen on the scoreboard as DSC walked away with a shutout. Freshman Becky Bunnell took the honors of putting the ball in the net for the first time for the Rebels this season, when scoring in the first half against Palomar. Bunnell is a great player, coach Linda Huddleston said. 3-- 1 , 3-- 0 WV wA put up at W lire Dt win oi ! v She has huge energy on the field. Sophomore Heidi Bushman and freshman Nicolette Trickey added a goal each in the second half to seal the deal for DSC. This put a win on the opening game of their regular season this year. Key makers of win No. 2 of their season include freshmen Beth Storey, Marli Martin and Bushman. Their three goals gained the victory over San Diego Saturday. Another key player to mention is sophomore goalie Lindsey Tanner, who received her first shutout already in the season. Some credit could maybe be given to freshman defender Brianna Robison, who Huddleston said is an incredible The hard work in the summer training is paying off, but there is always room for improvement. With it being early in the season, the players are still learning on how each other play on the field. We need to get the chem- istry on the field, Huddleston said. Huddleston said she likes to use what they call a "possession-style soccer game." This requires excellent passing and quick movement. That is the reason for the demand of great chemistry and teamwork on the field. The Rebels head back to California for two more matches on Thursday and Friday.
