Show 10 THE WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 15. SUN 2000 Sports Harper, Dixie in Rotary Bowl Dixie State College will return to the Rotary Bowl once again. This time the Rebels will face William Rainey Harper College from Illinois. It will be Harpers first trip to the Rotary Bowl. Dixie finished the season with a 3 record. The Rotary Bowl will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2 at Hansen Stadium. Music, from page 1 but familiar concert on the opening night to about 750 audience members from the St. George vicinity. On the program were Swedish Rhapsody by Alfyn, Arnolds Clarinet Concerto No. 2, Op. 115, and the famous Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C minor, the fate symphony. "Beethovens fifth symphony is a marvelous piece, Caldwell said. "It is festive, excellent and familiar to the public. It has an appealing power to people." Indeed. The fifth symphony concentrates tremendous music energy and pure acoustic pleasure. It has been interpreted as the musical projection of Beethovens resolution. The strenuous process to victory of the symphony has been an implicit subject of many symphonies since, but none other has so caught the popular imagination. It starts with a simple rhythm of just four notes, but they are decisive, commanding and powerful. The rhythm dominates the first movement. It is a call, a motive, a symbol of SONG, from page 6 The radio then went on to play this song which tells the tale of a child caught in his parents constant fighting. The child expresses his confusion throughout the lyrics and basically wishes that everything could be wonderful again between his mom and dad. Sounds like the song youd want to dedicate to your buddies, right? Hopefully not. Having been a kid that went through my parents divorce, let me say that its definitely not something I want to bestow upon my friends. And this is exactly what this kid who requested this song was doing. He was wav Ballot, from page 2 presidential candidate and that they are to punch the hole next to the arrow next to the number next to the candidate they wish to vote for." "Hundreds of people spoke to me yesterday before the polls closed about their extraordinary confusion. I myself when I went to the polls was confused," Wexler said. 1 saw the people who came out of the polling places. They were crying. They were in tears. In hystencs." Republican officials were skeptical. "In the end there will be 46,000 people claiming they voted for Pat Buchanan by mistake," The Rotary Bowl committee always manages to get prominent speakers at its banqeuts, which are held the night before the game. This years speaker will be Thurl Bailey. Bailey, a former power forward for the Utah Jazz, recently released his first CD, and he is a highly regarded speaker. Accompanied by kettledrums, the victorious theme is echoed, repeated in variations and played by different instruments throughout the first movement. To some extent, the opening motto recurs in one guise or another in the entire symphony. "I love the piece, the conductor said. "I wanted to select it for our 20th anniversary. It is a celebration of triumph." The players, grasping fate with their instruments, made their best effort to express the intrinsic meaning of the music. They had been rehearsing for the concert every week. The iron was red hot; the players spirit was high. Although the Southwest Symphony orchestra sounds a bit tentative compared with renowned orchestras, the players created a festive and rapturous atmosphere in the concert hall and gave the audience a wonderful and enjoyable evening. Despite a reminder printed in a rectangular box in the program: "It is customary to hold applause until after all movements of a work are completed," the audience clapped after every interval. ing his little magic wand of divorce and misery and tapping all of his friends on the head wishing them a wonderful life. It's just plain silly and the funny thing is that this kid probably didn't understand what exactly his dedication was really saying. So next time you plan to make that radio dedication, whether its Britney Spear's Oops I Did it Again to your English professor, or Christina Aguileras Come on Over to that kid whos been stalking you, figure out what message youre really sending. Better yet, avoid dedications all together. They lead to nothing but disaster, chaos, and nuclear wars. There are better ways out there to show your buddies just how wonderful they are. said U.S. Rep. Mark Foley, a Palm Beach Republican. He told the Los Angeles Times that the argument was "a stretch of the imagination" and asserted that Buchanan easily could have polled 3,407 votes in a county that gave Foley's own ultraconservative, Reform Party congressional opponent 2,65 1 votes on Tuesday. "I saw them going to the polls with Confederate flags flying on their trucks," said Foley, who said Democrats were grasping at straws. He and others said the ballot had been reviewed and approved by both major political parties and by state election regulators. missed-punchho- Hoops, from page 9 threes to end the half and give k Dixie a 4 advantage. Dixie continued the run after the break with five straight points from Williams fob lowed by a bucket from Lloreda to push their lead to 28.
