Or maybe you wonder, but don't know who it is. But hopefully you're one of the lucky people who know Amber Holt, activities chair at Dixie State College. Amber came to Dixie College as a Dixie High School graduate. She was born and raised in St. George and just celebrated her 20th birthday last Friday. All through high school Amber managed' a very busy schedule. She played volleyball, ran track, was over activities on the Exec. Council, headed up the Angel Tree Christmas project for her school, was involved in many clubs, played for the Ikaika volleyball club, and countless other things that she didn't have time to mention. Then Amber moved on to college. And why did she choose to come to Dixie State? Mainly because she was given an academic scholarship and wanted to obtain her associates at Dixie State and move on to a bigger school. By knowing Amber, one can tell she's the type that can't keep herself from getting involved. That's why she ran for her position. She explained that she wanted to be able to plan activities to provide entertainAnd that's ment for her fellow students. exactly what Amber has done. Most people don't realize how much work goes into to something as seemingly simple as a stomp. There are a lot of things to organize and follow through with. She also plans the other activity nights, including the comedians and other entertainers that come to campus. Other duties include planning Powder Puff football and the Mr. Dixie pageant. And all the while Amber is still smiling and eager to serve others. In what spare time Amber has, she loves to go rappelling, water skiing, playing running and playing the piano. She recently ran the St. George marathon and came in just over four hours. What's even greater is that Amber actually enjoyed it! She also works at Bloomer's, a local florist, which she absolutely loves. Help for writers By Julie Christensen Reporter julieC relvIiuM dixitFor all of those aspiring writers and poets who have experienced the frustration of writers' block, Natalie Goldbergs book "Writing Down the Bones" can help. In this book Goldberg gives suggestions on bow to pick a topic to write about, and how to get started. Helpful hints on emphasizing specifics and details are included throughout the bool Please see BOOKS, page 7 Rebels, from page 4 wonderful things can come from an opposition. "A loyal opposition" is necessary in a balanced government. The opposition and indeed, the rebellio- n- of our Founding Fathers gave us the freedom that we all enjoy. Many of the great men, as I have noted before in earlier editions, were Rebels-- Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Socrates, and, of course, James Dean. The word only has a negative connotation to pessimists who wish to think negatively. But most importantly, the administration gives us no clear benefit to changing the nickname. I personally dont believe one exists. Changing a nickname wont increase academic standards. It wont change Dixies reputation. It wont stop parties from occurring. It will just change a few cheerleading chants, and it will confuse our identity. Instead of mistreating the serious problem with a faulty method, the administration must look for other ways to overcome our party school image. Stiffening academic standards, increased community involvement, and group hugs would all be better ways of solving this problem. And they might actually have an effect on the problem. The name change wont. But what will it do? It will our hurt our school pride, as many of us will be sickened by a name change. More than likely, the community will pick a nickname completely devoid of Remember this is still the same pizazz. community that chose to call its minor league baseball team the Pioneerzz. I dont think that is a risk we should be willing to take. Rebels we are.
