Show MONDAY, AUGUST 30, 2000 THE SUN Sports Rebels obliterate Rhinos, By Stephen Vincent Editor-in-Chi- 51-2- 7 6 Bnnton pounced on the ball. The turnover stvmcem77(a hotmail com set up the Rebels third score, a three-yarplunge by Mahe. A second-quartfield goal by Travis Blackwell staked Dixie to the 23-- lead that preceded the Rhino's surge. The Rhinos could have made the game closer if it had been for penalties. One penalty nullified a touchdown pass from Stireman to Bucky Orton. The drive was later killed by Conway s interception. Another penalty cost South Ogden two points when they were taking a blocked point after attempt into the endzone. Dixies game was also hampered by penalties. The Rebels committed ten in all. During one sequence in the second quarter, the two teams committed six penalties on eight plays. Offensive tackle John Watson, the only returning starter on the offensive line, said the penalties were due to players concentrating too hard on blocking assignments, and not on the snap count. Mahe said that the team's goal is to win the national championship. You always want to do better than last years team, and thats the only way we can do better than last years team, said Mahe. noting that it would take plenty of hard work. Dixies next game is on the road against a tough Arizona Western squad. d Rhinos arent the cleanest of creatures, and Raideis aren't the most sanitary of men. So when the two are combined, the results can be grimy. And grimy it was on Saturday when the s of South Ogden took on Dixie State. The two teams combined to commit 26 penalties and commit seven turnovers. However, the Rebels couldnt complain as they managed to earn a win. BYU transfer Junior Mahe carried the ball 28 tunes for 137 yards, and Rebel quarterbacks Doug Smith and Austen Berge combined to throw for 266 yards and four touchdowns. But the werent pushovers. Ranked No.l in the country teams, South Ogden among 400 semi-pr- o battled back from a 23-- deficit late m the second quarter to throw a scare into NJCAAs seventh ranked squad. In the last minute of the first half, the s scored two touchdowns. The first score capped a dnve, and the Rhinos scored just 31 seconds later after Dixie fumbled the ensuing kickoff. So Dixie, a team that last year was known for eradicatmg their opponents by halftime, was suddenly in a ball game. The Rebels came out in the second half and their game, as they went d on a drive, culminating with a Berge touchdown pass to Brett Johnson. Three minutes later, Dixie comerback Danus McCormick sealed the game. South Ogden quarterback Dave Stireman floated a pass, and McCormick, looking like a cheetah in pursuit of prey, calmly snagged the ball as he raced at full speed at the line, broke a feeble tackle attempt near the five, and scored to put the Rebels up Following a touchdown by the Rob Morse, Dixie would get two more scores on passes to Kolby Wakefield and Cole Carter. South Ogden would score a meaningless touchdown with just over three minutes left in the contest to round out the scoring. Dixie jumped on the Rhinos early in the game. After Dixies Larry Conway intercepted Stireman to end the Rhinos first possession, Dixie marched 80 yards in just over six mind utes. Mahe capped that drive with a run. After the Rebel defense forced South Ogden to go three and out, Smith pulled out off one of the more remarkable plays of the game. At his own 47, Smith dropped back, but he was soon being pursued by Rhino defenders. Somehow managing to escape, Smith found room to set up and launched a pass downfield. Wide receiver Molen, who had to come back to the ball, eluded a tackle and spnnted into the Rhino-Raider- 51-2- 6 Rhino-Raide- 0 Rhino-Raider- 76-ya- d 37-1- Rhtno-Raider- 's 0 Rebels 51, So.
