Sports Editor: Barrett Johnson Dixie College athletes shine in the name of Rebel pride Jodi Brisko 14 Hometown: Wood Cross, Utah High School: Wood Cross High School Height: 6' Age: 19 Major: Athletic Training By LONI JOHNSTON THE DIXIE SUN From Woods Cross to St. George, Jodi Brisko has dominated the court and dazzled fans with her great athletic ability and outstanding team Play. Jodi is from Woods Cross, Utah where she played for 'the Woods Cross Wildcats. Her passion for volleyball all when she tried started in junior-high- , out for the volleyball team and was the only seventh grader to make the squad. In high school, Jodi led her teams to numerous victories not only in volleyball, but in basketball and track also. She is a three year varsity letter-ma- n in all three sports, and earned first team honors in volleyball and was Woods Cross Most Valuable Player. Jodis track coach always told her that she had more of a future in track and that more scholarships were available in track than in volleyball. Major: Business Administration By DEVON PILAROWSKI THE DIXIE SUN- Coming from a small town in Arizona, Dixies starting running back Morgan Bingham is no stranger to the ins and outs of football. Following in his fathers footsteps, who played at Ricks College, Bingham began playing organized football in middle school and his career took off from there. Going into college, Bingham had one problem, the small high school that he came from in Fredonia, Ariz. only played eight-ma- n football. Lacking in. eleven-ma- n experience, he was not high on. the college recruiting lists. He was given no option but to walk onto a team, so for academic reasons he attended Southern Utah University on an academic scholarship. After a short stay that had a duration of two quarters, Bingham went to Boston, Mass, on his mission and left Cedar and discus, that was most likely true, but Jodi has a passion for the game of volleyball. I think I wanted to make it in volleyball especially because she said that, Brisko said. And meet the challenge she did. Jodi had the opportunity to play on a Junior Olympic club volleyball team that traveled to Orlando and placed 13th in the nation. This is Jodis second year playing for the Dixie Rebels and she hopes to continue to play at a school that offers an athletic training program, preferably in northern Utah, but Brisko said it doesnt matter as long as she can play volleyball. Jodi has had an outstanding season and learned a lot this year but feels that her team could have done much better. I know we could have gone farther, she said. I dont really know why we didnt but I know we had the talent to go further than we did. Jodi is a middle blocker and enjoys hitting and blocking more than any other aspect of the game. Blocking and hitting have the most impact on a game. Putting down a good hit or making a strong block really in contact with Greg Croshaw. Not only was he given an academic scholarship, but an athletic one as well. He has played for Dixie for the past two years and his obvious talent has been proved by being named fourth in the Western States Football League in rushing and by contributing 697 yards in the Rebels regular season. The Rotary Bowl is about here and like most of the other players, Bingham is excited to play. He would have liked to have another chance to play Ricks again, but just the opportunity to play is good enough for him. We would have loved the opportunity to play a higher ranked team, but we just have to be ready to go, Bingham said. thing. I got to see a lot of peoples lives change while on my mission, said Bingham, It gave me a good foundation to build upon. Once his two years in Boston was over, Bingham was disappointed to find out that his old coach at Southern Utah University had resigned and with him went his scholarship to play football. This is when Bingham first came Sorry ladies, but this guy is taken. Bingham got married to his new wife Sommer on June 14 of this year and the couple could not be happier. His major goals in life, now that hes married, are to be a good father and to just do what ever is right Binghams advice for those who attend Dixie now and everyone is to Work hard in anything youre going to do. Any opportunity to pursue my education, and football career, would be great, Bingham added, but I wont compromise the quality of my education for football. (Education) is the most important City. gets the crowd in to it. She attributes her success to her parents and coaches. Jodi believes her parents support and constant critique is what has made her the player and person she is. They were always worse than my coach, Brisko said. They were always telling me what I needed to do to be my best. Jodi is also interested in someday being a coach herself. She said that volleyball is a good way to get through school but it is also a good way to stay out of trouble and a great way to go through life. Throughout the Rebel season, Jodi said it was hard to lose to teams that werent very good but that she was part of a close knit team. Were a close team and have made good relationships that will last a long time. Brisko has a bright future in the game of volleyball and life. She said at first she didnt really think she would do it but coming to school to play was a dream. This all-stathletes prescription and advice to other dreaming jocks is to always believe in yourself and never give up. Never sell yourself short and always play every game as if it was your last.
