Show Program' Bureau lives again in Dixie Spiritn Ken Gourd in Copy Editor Many groups have been started and activities have been planned with the goal of bringing more school spirit back to Dixie College. One of these groups is appropnately named Dixie Spint. Dixie Spirit is the resurrection of what was formerly known as Program Bureau, which was started at Dixie more than 20 years ago. When Program Bureau "died" several years ago, much of the school spirit it helped bring to Dixie went with it. In an effort to restore that spirit, this group has been revived, according to the group's adviser, TrishMecham. And though the name may have changed, the spirit and the goals of the group remain the same. "I want the kids to learn," she says. "I want them to be exposed to different styles of music from every generation, from pop to jazz to rock to country, and to develop an appreciation for them all. I also want the kids to be able to entertain. There is a big difference between singing and dancBut our main ing and etertaining. goal is for the kids to have fun. Nothing else is worth it if the kids dont have fun, and if they have fun, the rest will take care of itself." She also says the group has a mission to represent the school. "I would like to see the school by our group. I would also like to bring more school spirit back to Dixie. The name says it all." rw "t rw ""I " i I exceptionallly close-kn- Spirit. Dixie Spirit is a performing group currently composed of over thirty members who have varying degrees of ability and performance it class experience. It is a listed in the current class schedule as Music 121. The class meets each Tuesday and Thursday from pm. The students learn the words and music to a wide range of songs, and choreography (dance steps and hand movements) is then added to make the numbers complete. "My philosophy is that nothing is sacred. We tell everyone in here not to learn anything too well one day, because it might be changed the next." It would not be accurate, however, to say that Mecham is the group's choreographer, because "everyone is welcome to make suggestions about what to add, what to drop and how to change something. Several of those suggestions have been accepted, not just by me, but by the consent of the group. We don't want to make anyone do anything that would make them feel uncomrortable," she says. "In order for that to happen I need to have feedback from everyone in the Five to a de devious. The same kind of thing doesn't happen in, say, a math class with 100 students, because the opportunity isn't there to get to know one another. It's important for our group to be close because audiences can sense whether there's a chemistry between performers, and they react to that." But friendships formed in the group are more than temporary. Alumni from Program Bureau reunite regularly to renew the lifelong friendships formed while they were members of the group, and Mecham foresees the same thing happening in Dixie J c '4 S In addition, she says that one of the purposes of the group is to build friendships and camaraderie between tlie members.
